    Proper period finish

You can put a few drops of colors in oil or 844 industrial colorant in your linseed oil with some thinner and make a fine stain. Remember as linseed oil oxidizes it darkens especially in a dark place like a safe. Might hit it with a wash coat if you take it down to bare wood. This will help the...

    Proper period finish

The problem is what did the trained monkeys at Mitchell's do to the rifle? This will probably have to be removed before anything is done. Flaxseed oil which is similar to Raw Linseed Oil on the stock. You have to heat this stuff up to get it to dry or hang it up outside somehow in the sun on a...

1937 Sauer from the Grey Blanket?

I have an M block 37 Sauer that's the front band short of matching. Beautiful original striped stock that unfortunately got sanded. What pictures you need?

    My first Mauser model 98

My 37 Sauer RC shooter, mixmaster, mutt, Ebay parts special still draws comments and questions from the black plastic crowd at my range. It's assortment of numbers never comes up. I have like $300 in it. Put that thing in the right stock, get the period correct parts you need and shoot the heck...

    Soooo Rare

Mitchell's has made a mistake in their description of these historic rifles. They are not Gestapo rifles made by prisoners at concentration camps, they are the even rarer General Mills K98ks made by a small California company to be used as free prizes in very large boxes of cereal. The project...

    Ammo

Says it won't chamber in a K98k. The stuff I shot would but it made no mention of not being WWII spec. Thankfully I just bought a box cause it was cheap. It sure wasn't very accurate.

    Russian Capture Question

Mitchell's is the bottom of the barrel. I can't believe what some of them sell for on Gunbroker.

New Guy - Would love opinion on these two auctions and what I should expect for $1000

I don't consider a well repaired duffle cut to be a deal breaker. Pretty good indicator of a bring back.

The true origin/story of Russian captures?

My RC is a 37 Sauer. It could marched into Austria, Czechoslovakia, used in the capture of France and then sent to Russia in 1941. I wish it could talk.

    Mauser K98 BYF 44 Eagle Stamp/Punch

The history of a car and a WWII battle rifle are as different as night and day. The blood of someone who gave his life fighting for whatever cause may be on that rifle. Quite different than whatever you find in a backseat left over from some conquest years ago. :biggrin1:

    Mauser K98 BYF 44 Eagle Stamp/Punch

Perhaps some Yugoslavian partisan who lost several members of his family to the Germans picked up that rifle and in disgust defaced the stamps and dirty birds. A restoration dishonors that moment, it removes or covers up traces of Kursk or Bastogne. You just don't know how the rifles stamps were...

    Mauser K98 BYF 44 Eagle Stamp/Punch

I tried to be nice noticing the post count. I took to OP to be a novice to the hobby and respectfully tried to set him straight. Its insinuated that I am a Nazi. Whew! :googlie

Doubt you get any help. Collectors frown upon the such. Your trashing the rifle's history.

    byf 41 no matching numbers

Shellac gets brittle with age, that's why you see so many RCs with the finish flaking. Try a little denatured alcohol on the takedown.
