Update on FG42 from SMG Guns

I asked for oiled wood on my type II, but received heavily varnished wood. I stripped the varnish off of the buttstock and hand guards today, and they look SO much better. I also tarnished the brass rivets in the grips, and the sling attachment grommet on the stock. I am trying to add photos, but I keep getting an error message saying my files are too large.

I have had a couple of people PM me about removing the varnish from the wood of their SMG FG42, so I thought that I would replicate my answer here on how I removed it;
I used “Goof-Off sprayable stripper”. I put it on with a small paint brush, and fifteen minutes later I used 0000 steel wool to wipe it off. It took two coats to get everything off, especially down in the grooves. Then I rubbed on some cosmoline, and now it looks like a weapon instead of a shiny piece of furniture. If you want to “tone down” the shinyness of the grip rivets, and the brass grommet on the butt stock, just mix a little salt in vinegar and apply it with a q-tip. It takes 6-8 hours of reapplication every fifteen minutes to work. I was REALLY nervous about stripping the wood, but I am SO GLAD that I did it. Good luck, and you will be happy that you did it. Besides, if you decide that you liked that “furniture look” you can always put varnish back on.

If he's saying months away, you might as well assume another year.
The last time I e-mailed him on the type 1’s, he said that they should start shipping them in December of this year, or January of next year, so I guess that is “months away”

I put a order in for a Type 2 back on March 13th. Seems from the sound of it, it will certainly be a while until I see any rifle lol. Sounds like a previous batch of Type 2's needs to be finished, then a batch of Type 1's and then, hopefully the batch I'm in, of Type 2's again. Better really I guess, gives me more time to just comfortably put aside the funds needed.

Can I ask what the price for a new rifle is?

It depends when you got on the waiting list. If you want one, it is best to get on the list and ask Rick what his current price is. If you change your mind later, you are only out your deposit of $100

Wow, they were(this has been a while so take with a grain of salt) supposedly shipping out last(December 2022). Sucks to be one of those waiting now 2 and a half years but it's not exactly a need item.

I already missed my place in line once back in like 2013 or so. Got the email from Rick saying I was up for payment, and just couldn't make it happen at the time. Don't care what the wait time or price is this time, I'm not missing the opportunity for one twice. That 5000 to ~7800 price hike hurt the first moment I read it though.

Are the Type I's just more labor intensive to build or something? Seems they take much longer than the II's.

if I didn’t already have my type II, I would be all over this. It is SMG’s latest and best design, and currently costs $7500 (base price) with a two year + wait. The one in the auction also includes a $100 bayonet. The premium that the buyer pays for it should more than be recovered for the extra two years enjoyment they get out of it over waiting. It is sad that the seller waited so long for his rifle and now has to sell it. I wish it was a type I, as I am tired of waiting for mine.
