Update on FG42 from SMG Guns

Yeah, it looks like he was all prepared to enjoy his rifle. I feel bad for him that he has to sell everything.

kkrad you posted "...It is SMG’s latest and best design, and currently costs $7500 (base price)..."

I have one of the Type II rifles from the first batch they produced. Do you know what all differences or upgrades that have been done since then?

Thanks

Most of the improvements are cosmetic. The new ones have faux rivet heads machined onto the receiver and better angles and contours that match original receivers. Another improvement is that the new type II’s take normal ZB26 magazines, as well as Rick’s modified ZB26 mags with the extended catch discreetly welded to the back of the mags. This is the ONLY type of mag that will work with his type I’s. Many people have complained about ZB26 mags coming/falling out of the original type II rifles, and this mag improvement gives more surface area for a positive lock-up. I own both types of mags (modified and unmodified ZB26 mags), and the “improved“ mags are a much tighter and positive fit in my type II rifle.

Hi all, great thread with tons of useful info!

I ordered my FG42 TII in 308 March of 2020 and received my rifle March of 2023. Totally worth the wait, the rifle is truly a work of art.

Range report:
- 200 rounds so far, only 1 stoppage when using the magazines supplied by SMG. I made a couple mags myself and they do not work nearly as well.
- I think the trigger is much better than others described on earlier rifles. My trigger is long and "squishy" but very predictable and not heavy.
- I opted to buy the windage adjustable rear site - money well spent in my opinion
- Recoil is negligible, bystanders at the range complain about the muzzlebreak back-blast.
- Best group so far was slightly under 2inches at 100 yards (5 rounds).
- The FG42 draws a ton of attention at the range, sometimes more than I want! I have learned some interesting FG42 "facts" from my fellows at the gun range......

A word on the ZF-4 scope and 2 piece mount:
- I purchased the Czech reproduction ZF4 from Numrich and a Estes Adams 2 piece mount (I think from one of the members here).
- The mount is (in my case) incredibly difficult to adjust. Like playing 4D chess. There are 4 different screws that provide tension, and I found it impossible to find a balance where the scope would stay tight in the rings yet not so tight that you cant slide the mount off the receiver rail.
- After many hours and several range trips, I added stainless steel shim material to the inside of the rear ring (only .004in of material). The shim increased the tension just enough to make all the other adjustments line up.
- The scope itself does provide value at the range, especially at our 200 yard line. Plus the scope looks super cool.

On a different note, I sent an email to Rick asking to buy some additional magazines, or at least the followers, and I have not received a response. I will try again, my "home made" mags are not working out!

The high bidder got a nice one without the 2-3 year wait. The way I look at it, the extra he paid is the “rent” for getting it right away.

It's a lot to pay for just having it early, but to each their own. I think if Rick ever stops making these though, the aftermarket price will probably go well beyond that.

Rick emailed me for the money and I sent it the next day . Been about about 6 weeks . Should be coming soon. It's been about 2 years. Just what he told me two years ago. I have a type 1 on order for a year and a half. Rick said another 6 months. Did anybody notice the type 1 scope mount that was posted on GB. I think it sold for 2850.00.

edwardc, thanks for the update. I have been waiting over two years for a Type 1 and some guys here have been waiting for a lot longer than that, I believe.

I ordered a scope and mount with Rick....is that going to happen?

I ordered my type 1 also with the scope. The last email I received about the scope and mount from Rick was that at this time he did not have the time to run them. I was questioning him about the mount for my type 2-2. I ended up buying a correct type 2 mount from a guy on gunboards. $1,800.00 . I felt like I was overpaying but the one on Gunbroker sold for a grand more than that. I can't speak to what Rick's plans are but if it's like anything else they build , it will be worth waiting for.

Two years and 10 months since ordering and my Type 1 just got in yesterday.
They are still working/shipping them out. Just have faith(and a whole lot of patience.)
Woah, that's big news. That is the first Type 1 I have heard being delivered since forever.

How does it look and are you going to shoot it?

Not yet, opened the case and took a quick glance. I'll try to grab a picture tomorrow. (Been dealing with a lot of guns at the store and didn't have time today to fondle the fg42 yet.)

@ nothing yet
I believe Rick said they were trying for another run around December? Y'alls orders can't be too far off.
