No War Eagles For You!

I rarely post turd alerts, but this one is too rich in study material for new collectors to pass up: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=384981365

Basically someone took a real bcd41 barreled action and completely faked everything else around it; stock, bands, bolt, triggerguard, waffenamts, serials, wood proofs....everything.

MODEDIT BY HB: I added the pics below so they would be topside and preserved in the event this brown trout resurfaces:

I will say THANK YOU!! As a new collector. IMO a mod should save these pics and make them a sticky or part of a sticky for new collectors in the future to look at.

Turd Salesman

Has anyone on this forum confronted him? He is so bad that I never even look at his guns. He must have a following of morons because he sells everything he posts.

I sent him a message letting him know he boogered up the 2 on the front large screw above the floorplate when he stamped the numbers. :googlie Hope he gets that fixed!

He sells a lot of Swedish Mausers too. Always gets good money and positive feedback. Just reading the various forums has blackballed him no matter how legit the gun looks.

I posted a thread on the GB GD forum asking if it is OK for people to sell faked collectibles.

May be poofed quickly as the seller is high volume but that initself will be interesting

As I'm still a newb at spotting humped parts. It would be cool if the pictures of the humped parts could be copied, and a small description of what to look for/how to tell with them. I can tell some of the parts in his pictures have been restamped, but there are some I honestly can not. I'm sure it becomes easier with time.

First obvious thing is that rifle (BCD41) should have a Cupped butt plate.

HDH.

1941 was the transition year from flat to cupped so there are likely BCD41s with flat butt plates.

However, it may be possible by number and block to determine if this one should be cupped.

My intention was to focus on the rifle. The seller and his wares have been hashed and rehashed for years. Some say he only buys and flips stuff, others say they purchased mismatched rifles online and had parts restamped to match before they got it. In the end, I have to say some of the burden is on the buyer to check what they are buying. I've seen some nice rifles go through his Gunbroker sales, along with some stinkers like this. This particular rifle has traits of other fake 98k's I've seen for sale by other people, so i doubt he did it or had anything to do with it.

I agree to this post. Would be very nice to have this!

The alleged turd is a 'g' block so should be cupped if "E" is the end of flat.

However, it is still possible a flat can come through. It was not a law they had to not use a piece of wood later that was flat

However, variations should be verified.

I don't know that anyone can prove that flat and cupped were not both used for a short time. However, for the most part if not always, buttplates were numbered in 1941, with the full serial number including the letter suffix, and the letter suffix is normally extremely hard to fake.

Little off topic
But i once was offered an ax 41 all matching with flat buttplate(dont remember letter suffix)
Wish i had bought it but the price was too high for me at the time
By the way the stock was sanded
