Questionable Camos

http://www.wehrmacht-awards.com/forums/showthread.php?t=901818

I wouldn't mind seeing this white Heer m42 ckl 66 #3169 posted here.

Not to shift gears, but the most enlightening and accurate post in that thread, which post was ignored:

Chevy once had a problem with crazing paint, it can happen in a few years.

"Crazing is caused when two materials bonded together expand or contract at different rates causing lateral surface forces greater than the strength of bond. The expansion and contraction can be caused by thermal, chemical, or mechanical forces. Crazing can appear at any adhesion interface including that between substrate and primer, between primer and basecoat, or between basecoat and clear coat."

"Crazing" on helmet paint can be created by putting it in an oven at 300-350 for 30 minutes. It's an old trick.

Niblet,

I have looked at this helmet and the owners other helmets that he has recently posted and they look very similar..to me. I personally like it.

We are all in the helmet collecting hobby and all have our own thoughts and opinions, so what comments have been posted on GHW are just that.... peoples opinions. You have obviously been on the GHW2 site and viewed it. If you think it is a 'dud' why didn't you have the balls to leave a comment supporting your views. You just come scurrying back here and report back taking the piss.

EF

I would be careful what I posted on GHW2 if I wanted to remain a member there. Remember that the C-SS fraud was nurtured and protected there for years. Yes it was finally exposed there, but one must wonder what other 'mistakes' are being protected there to bolster someone's 'agenda'. Some nine years in existence with no doubt thousands of helmets posted, I would have expected much better performance from GHW2 on helmet issues such as camos, but I am constantly amazed by what passes muster there.

What I find really odd here is that there's "still camo paint on the wire," yet there is no paint "shadow" down to the base color. Actually it kinda looks like the helmet was painted tan, then the wire came on, and it went back to get a coat of green and brown.

Yet there is tan paint all over the wire? Am I just missing something that makes that a "high end" fake?

Rookies 2 cents here as well.

F.

I see a noticeable difference between the way TR era Wehrmacht forces viewed the concept of camouflage for their helmets, and the way modern day 'restorers' see the issue. This can be apparent by comparisons of known originals to exotic freshies. Restorers will typically spend much time and effort to achieve just the right look such as the correct texture, the correct colors, the correct scheme, the correct application of paint/wire, and so on and it becomes obvious that one is not contemplating a period field camouflaged German helmet but a work or art.

NEW! Item 920 M42 Coastal artillery helmet

NEW! Item 920 M42 Coastal artillery helmet

http://www.germanhelmetsinc.com/helmetssale.htm

This is an EF64 helmet which was produced after summer 1943 due to it not having a factory applied decal. It has been spray painted in a three color "Normandy" style camouflage pattern. The paint rates at 95%. The liner shows light wear and retains a nice "bowl" shape. The chinstrap appears to be original to the helmet. The reason that I refer to this helmet as a coastal artillery is because it has a name written in the liner which has a Kriegsmarine rank. Overall it is very nearly a top shelf helmet. ON HOLD

Hmmmm. This was actually my RPB54 about 10 years ago, and I did the camo job on it as it had the Finnish green paint job when I got it. Oh well. I think I sold it for $800.

http://www.ima-usa.com/original-ger...ct&utm_campaign=20170218&utm_content=20170218
What is a fair going price for one? I've seen IMA's items for awhile now their warehouse is actually in NJ IIRC. What percentage of what they sell is legit? Is any of what they sell ever at a good price?

re: the snow camo above, I think that is rust bleed-through as a result of an outdoor cooking session.

Kriegsmarine M40 Tropical Pattern Camo Helmet

https://lindamaemilitaria.com/collections/headgear/products/kriegsmarine-m40-dak-camo-helmet-rare-combo

This M40 has quite a bit going for it. With a rare combination of a stacked Kriegsmarine "Navy" decal and a tropical/DAK hand painted camouflage field paint pattern, this is an amazingly rare set. The helmet has very tight split pins that show no signs of tampering what so ever. The inside of the lid has a very supple leather liner that is original to the helmet. The rim of the shell has the soldiers last name of " Morath" painted on it, and is maker stamped ET64. This shell markings indicate it was produced by "Eisen-und Hüttenwerke, size 64." Kriegsmarine helmets are hard enough to find, add in a rare tropical camo pattern and you really have a killer piece!

looks like contrived wear,,but I'm not sure

A rare configuration (red flag), KM M40 with tropical tan paint, proceed with caution my fried. I'm just not feeling it. It does look like contrived wear IMO - well distributed minor-moderate wear with concentration on the lower neckguard. We don't see a crown photo, but what I can see it is more of the same there - very unnatural wear IMO.

This may be a heavily worn original ET M40 KM that has been jazzed up with tan paint and then distressed.

I agree completly

GHW2 wire camo - SOS purchase.

RAL colors off. near 100% coverage with only minor wire scrapes. TWO types of wire ??

This is what is today being brought home from the SOS vetted on helmet forums. Unfortunate to say the least what is happening to this hobby. How much are they paying for this stuff ??

GHW2 DAK camo - SOS bringback.

The new face of helmet collecting. Once again, near 100% coverage with very minor wear despite a well worn interior. Heavy sand camo overdone, IMO. Most Afrika camoed pots that I have seen had a smooth finish, not heavy texture.

FYI, many DAK/ North Afrika helmets have extremely dark sweat stained liners (it was hot over there). This liner does not reflect such heavy sweat staining - a good indicator that many liners in these supposed 'DAK' bringbacks did not see action in North Afrika. And if the liner didn't, certainly the helmet didn't.

The word is obviously out on WWII German camo helmets. They command premium prices and demand is through the roof. So why not take well worn low-$$$ original helmets and 'upgrade' them into camos ?? A $300 well worn ND can be jazzed up into a $3K camo. That's 1000% increase in value if my math is correct. Any business major will tell you such profits are fantastic.

So we don't lose our focus, here is what an authentic Normandy camo looks like IMO. It was actually worn in combat - imagine that.

I love that helmet. One thing is for sure, camo helmets are certainly attractive. At one time I could never have fathomed spending $2k-$3ks on a beat up old helmet, especially when that money will buy a very nice K98k. But now....

Another Facebook beauty

heres another one being passed off as original
