BYF 41... looks like she's seen a hard life!

Nice looking rifle, congratulations on the find. I'm new to collecting so maybe I'm missing something, but didn't WaA655 continue at Oberndorf on into 41? Does the stock and hand guard have serial numbers?

    1940 Code 147 J.P. Sauer & Sohn Mauser, Value?

byf on the stock would indicate the stock being made at Oberndorf, correct? Also, the original front band serial number appears to match the stock serial number of 3218, then it was stamped over with 1732, with the 3 stamped twice.

    S/147/G question

It sounds like a 1935 second variation date code. I read where Sauer moved the date code from the side to the top in the b block, then changed again to a larger date code in the c block so it might be a rare find and something worth restoring and adding to the collection.

    WaA135 proof mark question/id

I see the circle but i think the swastika is worn or lightly struck. I don't see too many pics of the box type eagle wings on the web but I do see the more popular eagle proof like the ones on the side of the stock and behind the trigger guard on the hand grip.

    S/147/G question

Is the S/147 G on the top or on the side?

    WaA135 proof mark question/id

Here's a odd looking WaA135 proof mark I missed and would like to know a little more about it. The eagles wings appear to be boxed with no lines in the wings and no swastika. I only found one on the web and thought I would share this one and maybe find out more about it. Its located on the...

    Byf band acceptance question.

My byf 43 e block has only the last four digits in the serial number. So another question is when did they start marking them with e/135? My understanding is the instructions given to the inspectors were constantly changing, so it is my opinion that they started marking the back band on or...

    Inspectors mark question

Just sittin around with nothing to do so I thought I'd ask this question that keeps me up at night, I notice on the front of my byf 43 front sight is the eagle holding a swastika, and on some others I've seen the Eagle over the inspectors number. Can someone tell me the difference?

    byf 43 black paint

I think you're right John, I removed the paint and it looks a lot better now. Most of the paint flaked off pretty easy but there's still some in the corners and dips. I also turned the recoil lug around while I was into it. Thanks to everyone for your help.

    byf 43 black paint

Yes, they are very neat, wouldn't it be neat if we knew more about stock makers? My stock has numbers and letters on the wood under the buttplate and in the sling cutout hole that I understand is the date and possibly inspection marks, but I'd like to know where the stocks were made. The letters...

    Buttplate ink stamp

WaffenamtWaA147 buttplate brg Very nice inspection stamps! And the orange base paint looks very good as well. So far those are the only ones I've seen. Not too many photos floating around on the web. Thanks for link, I really enjoyed it!!!

    "S" marking on K98 parts

Waffenamt and the letter S The S kind of looks like an Imperial S but then again it looks like a modern S with a slash through it to me. Imperial S's were more script looking weren't they? This is my OPINION, The S was slashed by inspector 214 after he inspected the older parts and approved...

    Stock Manufacturers

Can't find any info anywhere on stock manufacturers. Is there any way to tell where a stock was made? My rifle is a byf 43 with walnut stock. It does have numbers and possibly letters stamped in different places, like under the butt plate and near the recoil lug. Does any of these number/letters...

    byf 43 black paint

backward recoil lug I did notice the lug had a very small amount of side to side play like the nut wasn't snug. I had no problem turning it around and snugging it up to remove the play. It fits and looks a lot better now, the paint chips off kind of easy with my finger nail and I may go ahead...
