Update on FG42 from SMG Guns

Here is a video of my two SMG FG42s. The first part is basic development and history. The second part talks specifically about Rick's take on the design. Scroll down to the comment section for the timestamps. Thanks!

What type of 8mm ammo does SMG recommend? Will jacketed softpoint function property? I understand that any surplus ammo will void the warranty, is that correct?

Video of Rick firing SP through an FG-42 II.

I believe they recommend any new made ammo (PPU or S&B come to mind).

These are just too cool to pass up so I’ve got to order one and I received Rick’s questionnaire. I am leaning toward a Type II as my right arm isn’t as bendy since I broke it at the wrist a few years back and I don’t want to risk not being comfortable shooting a Type I due to the grip angle.

My question for the group - would you change anything now that you have lived with your type II for awhile? Things like metal finish choice, wood type, light or dark wood stain, adjustable rear sight or original pinned, etc? I do plan on getting a repro scope. Thank you for your time.

John you’ll be happy with anything you get - top notch work from Rick. If I had it to do all over again I’d likely heavily consider the .308 version, zb26 mags are finicky and 8mm is expensive. That said I was still very happy.

I sold mine simply because I wanted to recapitalize the investment into an original rifle, and I rarely shot it because it was too pretty!

I will say, I did find the SMG guns prone to rust. I have many rifles all stored correctly that have never rusted. Somehow, I managed it on the barrel of the rifle. Likely user error, curious if I am alone though?

I don't have mine yet, but if you look into the video I just posted regarding softpoints, you can see there is a lot of surface rust on that gun. What kind of finish was yours?

I got mine all blued but I don’t think I’d recommend that, 90% steel rifle in Texas humidity, yeah, it’s prone to rusting. A couple of times I’ve caught minor surface corrosion starting and easily wiped it off with some ballistol. I habitually try not to overly handle the steel on a rifle, but with the FG it’s unavoidable. If you got it blued you will need to keep on top of the oiling for sure.

Thank you for all the replies! I was considering .308 since I have several other rifles and lots of ammo. Can anyone please post a photo or two of the shortened mag adapter, mag doors and ejection port. Do these changes make the rifle look “weird?”
