Yes thats correct.

The SSZZA4 marking is associated with an SS depot. Basically an SS military depot and armoury, where it seems they also made 'new' rifles, largely using rejected and recycled components.

The SS contract rifles are something completely different. They originated from an actual order the SS placed with Steyr to manufacture new rifles specifically for SS use. The manufacturing process of these rifles is heavily associated Mauthausen-Gusen KL, where it seems a lot of the metal components for the rifles were made (such as a lot of the receivers). However, they were actually assembled and finished at the Steyr plant.

Speaking of which a friend that I made recently has a RC single rune k98 if I remember correctly. I cannot confirm it's authenticity though. I should have him join the forum here.

'single rune' rifles are part of the SS contract. You should have your friend post it here, they are quite commonly faked.

I believe a lot of collectors considering the SS depot rifles to be more desirable than the SS contract guns. I'm into the SS contract myself though.

Seriously though, it would not surprise me that it was whoever did the rebuild for the SS also sometimes serialized the buttplate. I think there was even one more SSZZA stamped rifle where I had seen a serialized buttplate.

PS: speaking of it, recently had my hands upon the most unique SS rifle I've seen so far. SSZZA4 marked barrel and SSZZA2 marked receiver, a SS DC sniper rifle where the receiver was a 359 accepted armorers spare part. Optics were matching the action btw, focal adjustment dow+.

I’ve not seen a legit sszza4 numbered buttplate. I’d be interested to see photos of what you consider a legit one. You say it wouldn’t surprise you that whoever did the rebuild for the SS did the serial numbering on the buttplate, I’m not sure you understand the SS depot guns if you say that, as it was the SS depot that did the sszza4 work, not someone else. Most likely numbered buttplates are from postwar diddling of people who don’t understand the breed.

What I intended to say was that the SSZZA were acceptance stamps. So from a technical standpoint "SSZZA4 work" does not exist, they only checked repairs outcarried by themselves or whoever they worked with. Secondly, if you read particularly what I wrote then you'll notice I did not say SSZZA4 but only SSZZA without a number. You might remember the SS DC conversions outcarried by Waffenwerke Brünn which were later to be accepted at Oranienburg which identified them as location where the SSZZA2 stamps then must had been applied. Hence work outcarried for the SS by someone else.

Will have to check if I have pictures of the serialized buttplates, if I do find them I'll post them.

I’m sorry, I’m thoroughly confused. You mentioned serialized buttplates, not inspection by the SS or double claws assembled by the Czechs. Your sentence suggested someone else reworked rifles and possibly numbered buttplates which were then sent them for inspection. I simply meant the SS reworked the rifles which are marked sszza4 and they didn’t number buttplates.

Seems we were talking a bit on different topics, sorry if I was not clear with what I meant. I said I've seen serialized buttplates on other SSZZA marked rifles and that it would not surprise me that the serialization was done during wartime, by whoever, and on SS rifles. I did not intend to bring this in connection with SSZZA4 stamps.

Correction to my previous statements: found pics of one of these rifles with a (stamped) serial on the buttplate. That originally SSZZA2 & SSZZA4 marked rifle was post WWII reused by Vienna Police, as documented by the serial and their gun books. Therefore the serial on the buttplate might had been added by them and I concur with mrfarb.

hi, I have a BNZ 43 single rune rifle, S/N 3997, interestingly it's been to Israel where they rebarrelled it but they didn't convert it to 7.62 so its still the 8mm.

I'll probably hate myself for doing this, but I'm ready to redo the SS contract and Single rune study we had from Gunboards. HOWEVER, this one will be different- for this one, I will need this info : serial (and location) Code/year (large or small font), barrel code/ final waffenamt. If matched, I am noting the placement of the serial on either triggerguard or floorplate, and if bands are numbered I'm stating as much. This is just for you guys to be able to spot the trend I have seen.

For ALL bnz44 single runes reported, I MUST have photos. To be Frank, I think they are all Ukrainian boosted. I have my reasons, and this study should help clarify these misunderstood Steyr versions. RC rifles are WELCOMED and ENCOURAGED, they still hold a lot of info re barrel codes and serial placement (rcr/bbl).

I'll dig mine out and put them here, but feel free to respond to this thread with yours. As I build the thread, I will attach it to the sticky above concerning these.

Also, I'm arranging these by barrel code, not by serial! This will be very telling as it develops- I've done this research myself, but wanted to do it on the forum for all to see what I have seen. If you can, try to report it in this format to make it easier for me to cut/paste the info.

I have taken the liberty of interspersing the SS Contract and Single Rune rifles together based on barrel code/features. I'd like to point out that I am doing this to establish a trend, the trend that seems to show the link between the two. Also, I am placing the non-Steyr barrels in the same general barrel code vicinity as Army contract guns (ie after cc code) and also arranged them by features. While it looks very complicated, I know what I am looking for. One downside is barrel codes are NOT consistent identifiers for production sequence- rather, this is a way to establish general patterns. You are always going to have some strays, but the majority will follow the pattern. I base this on my bnz45 barrel code studies, assuming the same patterns can/will exist just 5-6 months earlier for the same manufacturer.

i got a bnz 3013 j with no ser on rev only the barrel, its a bnz 4 ...all matching excpt bolt its all matching by it self

I have taken the liberty of interspersing the SS Contract and Single Rune rifles together based on barrel code/features. I'd like to point out that I am doing this to establish a trend, the trend that seems to show the link between the two. Also, I am placing the non-Steyr barrels in the same general barrel code vicinity as Army contract guns (ie after cc code) and also arranged them by features. While it looks very complicated, I know what I am looking for. One downside is barrel codes are NOT consistent identifiers for production sequence- rather, this is a way to establish general patterns. You are always going to have some strays, but the majority will follow the pattern. I base this on my bnz45 barrel code studies, assuming the same patterns can/will exist just 5-6 months earlier for the same manufacturer.

I'll probably hate myself for doing this, but I'm ready to redo the SS contract and Single rune study we had from Gunboards. HOWEVER, this one will be different- for this one, I will need this info : serial (and location) Code/year (large or small font), barrel code/ final waffenamt. If matched, I am noting the placement of the serial on either triggerguard or floorplate, and if bands are numbered I'm stating as much. This is just for you guys to be able to spot the trend I have seen.

For ALL bnz44 single runes reported, I MUST have photos. To be Frank, I think they are all Ukrainian boosted. I have my reasons, and this study should help clarify these misunderstood Steyr versions. RC rifles are WELCOMED and ENCOURAGED, they still hold a lot of info re barrel codes and serial placement (rcr/bbl).

I'll dig mine out and put them here, but feel free to respond to this thread with yours. As I build the thread, I will attach it to the sticky above concerning these.

Also, I'm arranging these by barrel code, not by serial! This will be very telling as it develops- I've done this research myself, but wanted to do it on the forum for all to see what I have seen. If you can, try to report it in this format to make it easier for me to cut/paste the info.

I have taken the liberty of interspersing the SS Contract and Single Rune rifles together based on barrel code/features. I'd like to point out that I am doing this to establish a trend, the trend that seems to show the link between the two. Also, I am placing the non-Steyr barrels in the same general barrel code vicinity as Army contract guns (ie after cc code) and also arranged them by features. While it looks very complicated, I know what I am looking for. One downside is barrel codes are NOT consistent identifiers for production sequence- rather, this is a way to establish general patterns. You are always going to have some strays, but the majority will follow the pattern. I base this on my bnz45 barrel code studies, assuming the same patterns can/will exist just 5-6 months earlier for the same manufacturer.

Can someone tell me if this a legit marking? Im trying to make sense of the stuff above but not to sure what is your opinion?

Good Evening. I found this thread while on hold on the phone and I began to look at the data collected because I have had a no letter suffix, bnz 44 rifle for a number of years. What caught my attention was the importance placed on the barrel code. I had never really thought about it. Upon pulling it off the wall, the barrel code was avk AZ with no firing proof and an eagle over 13. That struck me as off because most of the codes on other rifles around my serial are DH or DE, not avk. Then I looked up the barrel code in laws book and it said avk was used in ‘45. I know this book has some mistakes and/or omissions but how could a ‘45 barrel be on a ‘44 production rifle? Serials are found on the stock channels, safety, barrel, rear sight base, and bolt handle. V7 mark is present on the right side receiver ring at about the wood line. I will post the serial and pics tomorrow but your input would be appreciated. I’m hoping it wasn’t re-barreled post war. The AZ on yours and the DH and DE you reference are the 'steel lot codes' used for quality control tracking. The avk and e/13 are for the company Ruhrstahl AG, Brackwede who finished the barrel. All good.

Your barrel code is what is used to place the rifle in order, not the serial - so look for other avk barrels in the list (they are in red). Although lacking a firing proof is odd - but, let’s see pics and we can determine how original it is. Feel free to post them in this thread.
