Questionable SS Helmets

Mauser, we are not SS helmet "experts", so what do we know ??

It is highly possible that the 1935 CA Pocher SS Runes decal on silver is actually based on these painted shields.

These look pretty good for painted shields.

This helmet deserves a place of honor in the Questionable SS Helmets thread.

Assessment: many hard breaks to the black paint where it was popped off, not worn off over time. The black paint itself has a newness and richness to it that does not match known originals. Apparent Pocher SS decal, if original, looks to be brand new and likely recently applied (many Pocher SS decals are known to have been postwar applied).

This could well be an example of an original Quist M35 (probably Heer - green finish) that was black painted and decaled in recent times.

I know this view contradicts the X-ray technology.

These photos were sent to me from a close friend who was offered the helmet yesterday I presume. He thought it had a chance to be a good ET on and EF shell.
From the get go I thought it was too good to be true. Something looked off. I told him to post it as I wasn't 100%.

Turns out is a sham-pain-ruin.... Dave Wyatt is a wiz at badges and has one of the best eyes out there. He was temporarily fooled by this sham.
I cant stress the importance of having a network of close friends and using forums as a phone a friend life line when vetting this stuff.

Getting rushed into a sale because of time constraints is one way a seller can force a sale of a bad item. As the old saying goes if it seems to good to be true it probably is......

There was just a case on WAF where a guy bought a 3k fake off Helmets of war website and now cant get a refund. Post that link if you like.. Bought first asked questions later.. A fools move in this day and age.

As some have said this might be the safest time in history to collect 3r stuff you just have to be smart about it.

Mauser, here is a section of the M42 EF lot# list. You will notice that this lot number range is lower, decaled, and with the side marked Gothic scripted factory EF stamp (SMGS).
Then there are the no-decal helmets with the rear marked block scripted factory EF stamp (RMBS), probably completed later in time from old stock planchets marked with lot number but not yet with factory code - completed after the 28AUGUST 1943 decal drop date.
Said helmet has these markings:

Wayne,

I have had a few people ask me about Helmets Of War website. I told them to veer clear. Jessie is a charlatan. Nothing more, nothing less.

Et m40 sd ss pocher

http://www.ghw2.com/topic/54116-is-this-a-legit-m40-ss/

ET M40 SD SS POCHER

At first glance, a very convincing M40 SS, but upon closer examination the decal is not the standard factory ET-SS decal but the SS Pocher.

I was initially mesmerized by this one since the ET factory did use Pocher SS decals on a few M35 and M40 helmets, albeit very sparingly.

GHW2 caught this one because of the saw-tooth graphics on the rune edges, indicative of modern printing.

Now it all makes sense; a hammered old helmet with heavily worn paint and Heer decal long gone (low $$$ helmet) upgraded with a modern SS decal (now high $$$ helmet).

Put it all in an old wooden box with paper label and you have a 6-8K item.

I sent this one to a friend as an example of a good fake. The decal was determined to be a fake Pocher. DougB compiled a comparison chart of SS decal to makers/years. According to the chart, Pocher decals should never occur on an ET M40.

Never is a powerful word.

We know that DougB is far from in-fallible re: the Champagne SS rune debacle. I have seen a number of non-ET decals applied to Thale helmets. IMO there is a good possibility that some of these could have been factory applied.

The decal to factory associations were not set in concrete re: ET Heer decals on Quist M40 helmets.

In 1936 the first Thale SS helmets used Pocher-SS

ET M40 SS Helmets with Pocher-SS in 1940

SS helmets are usually seen with ET-SS decals, but a block of helmets are seen with POCHER-SS decals. These helmets appear to be factory production with no evidence of reissue. (late 1940 - early 1941)

M40 ET64 840 SD SS ZSH 38,40STRAP RTGG POCHER-SS (NO EVIDENCE OF REISSUE)

I see a consistency here. Come to think about it, what would the Thale factory have done to rectify temporary ET-SS decal shortfalls ? Stop filling SS helmet orders or use the Pocher SS decal on a temporary as-needed basis ?

Here is the rest of the story....

http://www.auctionzip.com/auction-lot/WAFFEN-SS-HELMET-WITH-BRING-BACK-PAPER-WORK_7C34AC883B/

This is where helmets meet my area of study....Someone had the box and paper and paired it with the helmet. There is only one far away photo of the paper, but it looks good to me. I have no idea if the box is good.

Typical sucker bait. This could fool most anyone based on the photos. This is where the guy who made this detaches himself from the item and places it in an auction that is now put online. These auctions are "as is" most of the time and you have NO recourse once you buy the item.

There have been many helmet in a box scams over the past years. If it seems to good to be true it usually is.

An apparent SS helmet with SS decal remains and Germania tag. M40 SE64 9850 marked, this would have been a depot or field reissue as SE did not produce SS helmets. Green gray interior paint suggests factory SD Heer.

Price: US $1,100.00

I'm not an expert in WWII artefacts...but I'm convinced this helmet is all original.
I found that helmet in the bottom of a garage sale in Ontario Canada.
I cleaned up the helmet but had preserved the patina.
The rope that holds the panels is missing and the chinstrap also missing.
Two decals very used.
See pictures...this helmet is great and will generate a lot of discussion.

Thanks for watching

From Canada, if he's not an expert in WWII artifacts, how does he know what top collector's prices are ?

51721 M42 Champaign REPLICA? SS Single Decal M42 Combat Helmet Size 64 $400

http://www.svmilitaria.com/GermanWWIIHelmets.htm

This is a solid attractive combat helmet from an old collection. The paint is really nice as is the decal with a good even patina. The liner is a a light tan, but dry and the front and was glued together where it was broken at the forehead area. Are These decals real?? The price is my answer to this question, but perhaps it's the best deal on the web. It came from an old collection, and was originally bought back in the mid 1980s. This is a nice looking example for your collection which will display fine.
