Questionable Camos

Italian campaign two colors

GERMAN WWII COMBAT HELMET ITALIAN CAMPAIGN TWO COLORS PAINTED CAMO CAMOUFLAGE

Original untouched still dusty and dirty Germany war world two army helmet spray painted in a tan - green camo pattern. I have few of this in my collection and most came from the Italian campaign. Liner and chinstrap original to this helmet never replaced and very tight. Buy with confidence this is the real deal.

Well-distributed heavy wear, even along the 'transition line' or the area of bowl to neckguard/visor transition. This banded area is typically protected from heavy wear by its design. Lots of paint popped off of this one. Basically only one type of wear, almost no scratches scrapes or rub marks.

Paint in pristine areas is bright and vibrant, not aged and dull. Plenty of red rust on this one, indicative or recent oxidation.

Imagine what this one would have looked like prior to the forced aging; a brand-new freshly painted bright and shiny camo.

NEW! Item 723 M16 helmet with period snow camouflage

http://www.germanhelmetsinc.com/helmetssale.htm

This is an ET64 M16 helmet which has been camouflaged in white paint. Helmets like this are seen in period photography used in the Vogses or Alps mountains or even in the chalky-earth Champagne region. The camo covers the exterior as well as the interior up to the liner frame. Paint has been spilled onto the liner and the strap hardware. The liner is reasonably intact. A very hard-to-find WW1 camouflage type that is a 100% "one-looker". $2250.00

A lot of hard breaks to the paint on the rim, popped off as opposed to worn off over time, IMO. The rims of questionable camos have typically had a good going over. Overall wear and age is unconvincing, although I like the bits of camo paint on the liner (a nice touch). Photos are shaded (typical of this seller re: snow camos).

Very little if any of what I would call actual combat wear. What I see primarily is paint popped off. Liner shows heavy wear while camo is in much better condition proportionally (disparity of wear).

Unique m42 luftwaffe single decal camoflage helmet

http://www.ardennes44.com/en/items/...ingle-decal-camouflage-helmet.htm#prettyPhoto

Very nice and unique M42 Luftwaffe single decal helmet, it has been brush-painted with small splotes, the camouflage has been applied over a wire or phone wire camouflage system, looks like a « spider web design », the wires were removed but can clearly see were they were,
The helmet is a « hkp66 » with the lot number « 15216 », it is in good condition, the decal is still present at 90% and is partially covered but the camouflage, the leather liner is in good condition and still retains its original drawstring and original chinstrap, it is nicely marked with the company's name, the location and the date « LEONH. BECK - NURNBERG - date unreadable ».
This is truly a unique camouflaged helmet !

They say that these old helmets can tell a story. I think I know the story behind this helmet. It was brought to a 4th grade history class around Memorial Day in 1965 for show and tell. Photos of German troops in action showed some helmets with camo paint, so the kids decided to camo this one up like the ones in the photos.

M35 heer 3 tone geometric

http://www.ardennes44.com/en/items/...-3-tone-geometric-camo-helmet.htm#prettyPhoto

Amazing and unique M35 Heer camouflaged helmet, it has been brush-painted in a three color pattern (geometric), it still retains more than 95% of the camo. The helmet is a very early « Q66 » with lot number « 2782 », it has the first aluminium liner band. The Heer decal has been completely covered over but remains visible in relief. The helmet is a DAK veteran, yellow camo paint is visible under the 3-tone camouflage. The leather is still supple and still retains its original drawstring, size marking also present on the leather, it has been oiled by the old collector long time ago, the original early chinstrap is still present and is nicely marked with the maker's name, the location and the date (1936). The aluminium liner band is damaged at two places as showed on the pictures, this often happen with these early liner bands, because these early helmets have seen a lot of combats. Two split-pins have been touched and one has the washer missing. This is truly a unique camouflaged helmet !

Price :3150,00€

I like the garage paint spatter. That along with the oxidation and aging might make this one believable to some.

A few of the recently posted ones aren't what I would call 'questionable' at all.... but top shelf examples.

I think that in all this it's important not to brand certain helmets as post war modified when they're not.

Just my opinion of course

ZF, which exactly are you referring to?

http://www.ghw2.com/topic/51102-m35-rough-sawdust/

M35 Rough Sawdust. What do you think of this one?

EDIT: This GHW2 forum loves this obviously recent restoration. About 15 positive comments, 0 negative comments, including a Mod and Admin. They all lined up behind this one like tin soldiers. What is impressive is not the helmet, but that forums can exert such control over members posted opinions. I guess when Admins spend years cleansing helmet forums of 'riff-raff' and 'troublemakers', the only ones left are team players. They have sensored, suspended or banned all dissenters. This forum has seen literally 1,000s of helmets pass through over the years. I don't think these people are stupid.

Assessment: The pristine condition of the woodchips shows that the helmet never saw combat. The crown was rubbed against a concrete wall two or three times to produce the faux patina. The rim was gone over and the artwork set outside in the elements producing the bare rusted metal.

No problem, ZF.

The Ardennes Geometrik camo above shows a well-worn DD Heer likely, with well worn liner/strap, a low dollar helmet. The geometrik camo shows shelf wear and probably decades of rattling around in a war chest, but if you look carefully there is really no combat wear to speak of. The crown area is in pristine condition, an area often worn to bear metal patina. The geometrik pattern is a bit much as well, too exotic for most camos.

Take a well-worn, beat 300 EU helmet and jazz it up with some geometriks, and viola! you have a 3150 EU helmet. Too much money is being made for this to ever conceivably stop.

...The other 2 look ridiculous. I'm not expert, but i wouldn't buy them.

I'm also not an expert, but they look ridiculous to me as well. Probably seen 1000's of photos and I don't ever remember seeing one of a pattern anything like either of those?? Not even close.

Valentines day camo

http://www.italianwarfront.com/?page_id=9

Not sure if to call this turtle pattern or coastal artillery splotch camo but for sure an unique and great camouflage helmet. Helmet was originally painted tropical tan desert camo probably used by the Afrika Korps in the beginning. M-40 ET 62 shell. I originally called this the “Valentine’s day” camo because one of the camo pattern is hart shaped.

$2,250

Has camo collecting descended into complete madness ??? Some might call this the 'Valentine's Day Camo', but I think a more appropriate term would be '3-Ring Circus Camo' because it looks like something a klown would wear while selling balloons at a circus.

The tan interior looks good, but many helmets with good interiors had their exteriors irreparably damaged during the post war years by vets or whomever. These helmets are prime candidates for 'restoration'. I can see no factory textured paint underneath the heart photo, so this camo may have began its life on a bare exterior.

Red-brown and green colors are off, hardware store paint instead of RAL paint. Heavy pock marking on crown but otherwise paint in pristine condition (disparity of wear).

The heart splotch is the clincher for me because it shows the utter disdain that camo fakers have for the collecting community at large, to be slapping any kind of paint in whatever manner on any hammered old helmet to be sold to unwary camo collectors for authentic collector's price$$$. It's as if the faker, by painting the heart, is giving a big F-U birdie to all legitimate collectors and telling us all that he can paint whatever he wants on helmets because they will all be accepted by someone somewhere as authentic and no one can stop him.

Heck you can see the fresh crisp tape edge where he "formed" the heart. If it sat on a shelf for 80 years untouched it would not have this sharp of an edge.
