    What is this thing?

Picked this up in a trade recently. Kinda odd looking rifle. Red glue laminate stock. Eagle proof on right side. Most numbers dont match. No X in the receiver. import mark scrubbed off and poorly reblued. S/42 on receiver, but looks scrubbed. Also looks like the receiver was scrubbed in general...

    Gew 98 questions..

1920 stamp I have a beautiful GEW 98 with a 1917 Danzig stamp, the 1920 stamp, and a flaming bomb on the butt indicating spanish civil war issue. Really neat rifle with lots and lots of history and in excellent shape. Arsenal refinished. Check the right side butt stock on yours. It may have...

    KAR 88 short rifle finish

a few pics.. Comments (and criticism) welcome..The barrel bands, barrel shroud and trigger guard were bead blasted, polished and rust blued. The receiver, bolt stop and bolt parts were bead blasted and polished, the butt plate was cut to fit the stock properly and polished as well. Trying to...

    KAR 88 short rifle finish

phenomenal! I buy gew 88 rifles from time to time and they range from tomato stakes to decent but poorly refinished. I came into possession of a very poor looking kar 88 with a mint bore oddly enough. I wanted to bring it back to its original glory and maybe run some light handloads through...

    KAR 88 short rifle finish

Ahhh ok Given the types of bluing available at the time wasn't sure if "blued" was more specific or generic. Understood. Thanks again!

    KAR 88 short rifle finish

Ok so I am doing some research on the kar 88 short rifle or carbine or musketoon or whatever designation you are comfortable with. I am trying to figure out the finishes on the original rifles. I know the bolt and receiver were polished bright. The bolt release also polished. The barrel shroud...

how best to restore a stock ?

Also Wood bleach is designed for wood. Oxalic acid. Common household bleach is not designed for wood. Chlorine. Big difference. Red glue laminates are harder to screw up but still have to be careful to not accidentally delaminate. White glue stocks tend to be more delicate. Any laminated stock...

how best to restore a stock ?

Actually The scrubbing bubbles mentioned is NOT the bleach formula. I agree that easy off, anything with chlorine bleach, etc will ruin the stock possibly. I have restored literally hundreds of stocks in the last 10 years and never had damage from the methods I used. Now I should have offered a...

how best to restore a stock ?

savogran wood bleach I buy it off of ebay. Works wonders for stained stocks. But not stained as in wood stain, but stained as in black streaks or rust stains. Hot water and wood bleach. Don't breathe the fumes. Let it soak in, can scrub with a toothbrush then rinse thoroughly. But I do it...

    polish k98a scrubbed

Would this be the appropriate section to ask a question about a rifle I recently acquired?

OK so what did I buy?

mine looks similar really except the handguard issue and the flat butt plate plus right side of the stock has the same poor scrub attempt. interesting. i bought an "old rusty jap rifle" off gun broker a few years ago that turned out to be an all matching series 25 type 99 concentric circle. you...

OK so what did I buy?

his stuff is beautiful But brutally expensive. I may just part it out in the end. Too bad, thought I had a sleeper. I am seeing a polish wz29 handguard on ebay. Safe to assume it isn't long enough for this purpose? Or with some minor fitting may actually work? It indicates 16 inches long...

OK so what did I buy?

Lets just say For sake of argument, this thing is complete. I know anything Turk seems to command sub 200 to 300 price tags. Is this in the same range or is ti worth a bit more due to its unusual nature? I am not gonna spend more than its worth on it as a restoration piece. May be worth more in...

OK so what did I buy?

Ahhh interesting! I have seen a 98a Turkish stock for sale as well. That kind of explains some of what it looks like today. Based on the pics you see, does it look sorta complete minus the handguard?

OK so what did I buy?

Only place Actually this is the only place I have posted this question. Just won the auction this morning. Didnt really have high hopes for it, was more curious about the originality of the stock to the rifle itself, or more something thrown together to make functional (if at all). I normally...

OK so what did I buy?

Kar 98a. Looks like was possibly bubba'd at some point in its life. Bolt is original and correct but non matching. The stock interests me because it has the side swivels, lower swivel and takedown disc. Amberg 1911 manufacture. Seller indicates it is a cut down GEW 98 stock made to fit the KAR...
