Hi there.
Managed to snag this at an auction. With all due respect it was advertised just as a Spandau 1901 G98 with no mention of it being a German Colonial Rifle. Comparing previous sold prices to what I put down I'd like to say I think I may of done alright here (I hope)?)

After losing out on the G98 base sniper (but glad it went to a fine collector and not a dealer), hopefully wounds healed and this will sit nicely with my Colonial I.G M71
All matching as far as I can see.

Has the older 200 meter rear sight base as is proper for these. The U broad arrow marking denotes post war South African ownership.

Thanks , thats a good start. To be fair I stalked the threads on here on other ones , and did some research so quite confident of what I got. But worth a check with you guys, as you are the experts !

I think you did well too. The good news is it was in the UK and you got it for the sticker price with no export/import costs. Import costs and shipping boost foreign bidders basis..I think at the hammer price, you got a great rifle.looks completely righteous to me and the postwar South Africa use adds some neat history. It's also avoided the "Boer Bubba" molestation (whacked stocks, reblues, etc..) that so many of these have seen.

Congrats!

Thanks very much !!

What would be the correct sling for this rifle. I see it is lacking the quick detach and has a different hanger going through ?

I will have to remove the current loop to allow for the quick detach, or did some G98 slings have different ?
Yeah that's a post-war, probably South African wire loop on the rear. Just carefully twist out with pliers

Congrats on a nice pickup! I don't know much about colonial gewehrs but I do know I would like a rifle like this in the collection!

Very cool rifle. This photograph of mine came in yesterday. I was able to magnify certain areas that I found cool about it. Goes perfect with your thread.

Fantastic example of a Schutztruppegewehr 98. It really clean and in great shape. I think you did great. The rifle was used by the Union of South Africa Defence Force or UDF pre - 1964 markings.
Verkauft = sold.
Arrow in U = service
Diamond in U = sold out of service.
Your's looks a lot better then the one I just got from South Africa.

Thanks very much, having said that. Nothing wrong with your one, looks fine to me ?

Congrats on picking up such a scarce rifle and in nice shape to boot! I'd be thrilled to even see a Schutztruppe Gewehr 98 in person, let alone own one.
