Permission to join the Schutztruppe Gewehr club

Picked this up yesterday and its lovely, and @Absolut your G98 sniper rifle was in the rack , rest assured you won't be disappointed mate, it is real nice.

Shot my rifle this afternoon at 100 yards, and nice to shoot a G98 when you don't have to aim at the ground to get on the money, 6 oclock all in the black. Bolt is proper smooth too.

There is a little more story on your Gew98 btw.. it was originally in an earlier auction, but advertised with .308 caliber. I saw the serial on the barrel was original so I questioned the named caliber. They told me the proof says .308 and sent me pic of proof stamp. I asked them if the barrel has been lined because the barrel still has the original proofs and you cannot make a barrel diameter smaller unless you line it. Told them to hold a .308 bullet to the muzzle and see if it would fit. They then told me it wouldn’t and pulled it from the auction back then. Guess they then gave it to the proof house to proof again since it reappeared now in correct caliber. Really wonder what the proof house did, just incorrect inscription or if they fired a .308 round.
Well, originally I was interested in it too, but somehow forgot on it. Glad to know it in good hands now!

Indeed I was aware of the proof mistake before I bid as member of staff told me. After a big sigh I built myself a bridge and got over that. Glad they stamped it small and in an area that is not seen often..

The sling loop at the rear, just want to check again there is no historical significance before I gently remove ?
I want to make way for a G98 sling with detach.

It was probably added by the South Africans. If you want to mount a German sling you'll need to remove it. Otherwise let it be. Since the rifle has South African markings on the receiver you wouldn't be wrong to leave as-is and just not use a sling.

Thanks Chris, i'll think about it. I have some junker slings and brass pins in the garage, so could mock something up, as I do like to use a strap when free hand shooting.

Sorry guys, the X in a box I see on the wood. Not seen these before on rifles ?

Did you find out what the proof house actually did wrongly? And does it now have two proofs?

No I didn't 100% , only that "stamped caliber wrong at proof" but it has two proofs yes, the correct one and the 308 lined out. Luckily its quite discreet

Mind asking them about it? I really would be keen to know if the proof house tried (or did) fire a .308 proof round in the rifle :D

Is this double proof in any of the photos? Please post pictures of this anomaly.

Here you go, on this rifle the cleaning rod has more than one use it seems.
Confirmed as a stamping error so no 308 round was detonated in this rifle
