New Production K98ks

Anyone else heard of these Kodiak Defense K98ks? This is the first I've seen.
Interesting proposition I guess, maybe the price of RC's and other shooters will go down if these can make it into the US.

The bluing on the receiver looks funky, like it’s been aggressively scrubbed until the metal heated up some, and then given a high polish blue. You see that on crappy sporters sometimes.

I would be quite surprised if they are TRUE 100% new manufacture.

If they hit the US market, and I can pick one up, I'll definitely do a full inspection and if folks are feeling ambitious I might do a metallurgical analysis and full technical inspection. I'm betting its a mix of used and new junk.

Yes, I was thinking the same. I wouldn't be surprised if all the metal but the barrel was just scrubbed and re-blued original parts.

There's no way these aren't old receivers at the very least, probably bolts as well. Making a receiver from scratch takes a lot of tooling and effort that frankly is going to be beyond all but the largest companies, and even then there's rarely a good financial argument for it for a limited run of rifles for collectors.

Every so often Mauser used to release a few anniversary/jubilee year/etc 98 action rifles. I remember they had a run for the 100 year anniversary in 1998. If memory serves those were also refurbed old stock bolts and receivers. There were millions of the things made, it's not that hard to get a few thousand that are in good enough shape to re-work. They only started making actually new 98 style actions in 2009 or 2010 when they released the "M98"

We all know that modern-day Mauser Jagdwaffen / Isny is a different beast from Masuer Waffenfabrik / Oberndorf but if even they were re-using receivers I doubt some random company started forging their own.

I also doubt they're using the Mauser Jagdwaffen receivers because lol those things are expensive. Last I saw it was five figures. I'd love to get one as an interesting capstone to a Mauser collection but there are a LOT of things I'll drop that kind of cash on before I start looking at the new actions.

This is going to get me not well liked but I never considered RC’s to just be shooter grade weapons. Digress, I have several and I shoot them on occasion. My apologies if I took you the wrong way.

I think the theory that these are a hodgepodge of parts is a solid one; but doesn’t Zastava manufacture new production Mauser 98 actions for their hunting rifles? My point being they could just be using those blanks. But if a company other then Zastava is making them than it’s anyone’s guess.
