My First Mauser - K98 CE 44

Hello everyone, I created an intro post earlier today in anticipation of bringing home my first Mauser. I have been collecting C&R for a little over a year now and have a few varieties but I have been wanting a K98. I have been lurking on this forum all week and have learned a lot but took a chance on two Mausers today from a guy locally.

The first one is a CE 44 (J.P. Sauer & Sohn) and the second was a Turkish Mauser from 1941. The guy still has a Portuguese and a Swedish that I may look at as well.

The CE 44 is not all matching and I knew this going in so I am still looking at identifying all of the parts. It has the waffenamts on most of the parts as far as I can tell although they look smaller than some pictured here. The bold matches itself and I have not removed it yet for further identification. The stock does not appear to have any markings that I can tell and is likely not original to the rifle. The receiver looks like it has a notch taken out of it but I don't know what that could have been from and I am not sure about the additional markings it has.

Any information you guys can provide would be great and I look forward to learning from you.

Receiver =Left Side- 8174 (Gouge or notch) then vertical it looks like CK, Would this represent Metallwerk Neumeyer, Munich? Right side has really small 280??

Front Sight Base = 8174
Front Sight = 8174
Floorplate = 7931
Front Barrell Band - 4285 (different color)
Bolt, Safety, Hood? - 7414

There is no cleaning rod, no sling, no sight hood, and the stock does not have any external markings. The bore does not look so good but I am hoping it cleans up well. Hopefully I did alright with the price.

Pics to follow, after all of this they were too large.....sorry newbie issues here

Pictures Added

I was able to add the pictures and I am interested in any information you can give me on this rifle. The bore is scary so I have to really get in there and get that cleaned. Any suggestions on how to go about the first major cleaning and oiling? I picked up this one for $175 so hopefully I am ok.

Eric

Eric, Looks like a walnut stock set with cupped butt plate(?), will fetch probably $200 in the current rough state. So based on that information you did good.

I'm not sure if this is right, I think it would had more likely a laminated stock set with cupped butt plate. If you want one, sent me a message.

Best regards Tommy

Unfortunately the suffix of the serial is defaced, but a good guess at the range would be a t-block, part of the barrel code obscures the suffix also, but the characteristics (SBO) and the lower part of the suffix suggests it is a t-block, which the BC would fit that range. The "ck" you mention is a steel lot and is actually "dk", - and it is not a ordnance code, and it has nothing to do with the cable & metal working company from Munich.

The right receiver should have a e/280 and a e/37

As for the stock, the Dutch stock peddler is correct, it would have had an laminate with cupped plate (JPS didn't use walnut stocks this late). This is a late rifle for JPS, they would continue for sometime, for a few more blocks, but increasingly with "bcd" marked receivers.

Eric;
sounds like you did well on this. $175 not bad at all.
find a cleaning kit, work out the bore ,see if its a shooter or a wall hanger.
then you can decide to "rebuild it " closer to "from the factory" or not.

Any example is better than none.

Thanks for the comments and information. I broke the rifle down tonight and it had a lot of Cosmo beneath the stock. The metal looks pretty decent with some minor rust. I have run a few patches through the bore and it is not pretty. I have some hoppes in it now and we will see what it will look like tomorrow. Any suggestions on cleaning the bore that has not seen love in a a long long time?

I am looking for some additional parts (small and lower cost items) until I determine how the bore is going to turn out.

I am looking for a front sight hood, would this be correct? http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/1026810A.htm How much do these vary?

Plug the muzzle stand on end and fill the bore with Kroil or PB Blaster. Let stand for 3 or 4 days.

Sounds like you got a great deal! A agree with the above about plugging the muzzle and filling with PB Blaster.

I have had good luck getting genuine original non-repro sight hoods on the forum trader here. I have also had good luck with cleaning rods on EBay you just have to be able to identify original rods from repro rods of more recent manufacture. The variable there is the "Norwegian" rods as mentioned in Kriegsmodell that are often seen on the market. They ARE nice rods and may indeed be wartime production.

Of course you could always post in the trader here that you are looking for those!

Thanks for the help everyone. I listed my request for a non-repro sight hood and cleaning rod in the forum trader so we will see how that goes. I am looking at stock options and trying to learn what rifle my existing walnut stock is appropriate for. Looking to hopefully sell or trade it to acquire the correct laminate cup style stock for my rifle.

I have loved this process of learning and cleaning my first Mauser but I can't help but wonder who has the correct pieces (Bands, Floor plate, bolt) to my rifle and I am sure there is someone looking for my incorrect pieces. Of course with the quantity of these rifles, the amount lost or destroyed I would guess it is a needle in the haystack type of idea.
