K98 find

So would you guys give me the go ahead in this one? I finally got my money back from a seller who sold me a K98 that was made to look matching. I would hate for that to happen again, as this money I’ve been working for for a while

I think the seller is perfectly reputable (he's sold quite a bit here and I've never seen a call-out), and at a glance the rifle looks great. Check out the thread with the pics, lots of older and more knowledgeable members talked about it there. At the end of the day you have to decide if the 850 s/n in the stock bothers you. It wouldn't kill me, since the handguard and stock look like they've been together for a long time, and these factory errors are known to happen. Duffel cut is also a personal preference thing.

So aside from that, if you get a tingly feeling when you look at the seller's pics, then go for it. You have to like the rifle. There are plenty of matching k98k's there that don't do a lot for me, based on condition or rarity or all that. You've got to like something to spend $2k on it.

Some guys like to keep the duffle cut the way it is. If you do end up getting the gun and want to shoot it then repair it. There's a great thread on here how to do it.

I’m a newer collector so my opinion isn’t worth nearly as much as some other guys on here, but I think that gun is a decent first buy. If I was in the US I would consider adding it to my collection. And the fact that its been vetted by guys on here and the seller is pretty well known adds a great deal of confidence to what you you are getting.

And good for you for getting on here and chatting with the guys and asking questions. K98k’s have quickly become a real a passion for me as I suspect they will for you too ;) but the only reason I’ve had successes and have a nice little collection I can be proud of is because of help from the members here. Its a real minefield out here and it takes effort and a lot help to get to the other side, but its well worth it!

Man. After thinking about it, this just doesn’t give me those “feels” you guys talk about. I just don’t t know the next time I’ll get the chance to get the one I really want. The duffle cut just doesn’t seem right to me, and the 850 also pushes it over the edge. I want to have no doubt in my mind that the rifle I wanna get is 100% matching, with nothing really proving that it might not be.

Thanks again for your info guys. I understand I’m probably making you all frustrated with my not being able to choose.

I’ll keep in touch with more posts probably soon from other K98ks I’m looking at

No worries, we all have been there and sometimes still are!! But it’s part of the fun to really dive deep into a particular rifle, analyzing its make-up and condition. You’ll get a good one and this is how, by careful examination and using your available resources to your advantage. The hunt is thrilling and sometimes scary and sometimes a let-down, but in the end it’s really all about learning the nuances of the K98 and avoiding fakery.

I recommend looking at it not as a deadline but as a goal. Don’t think “right away” but think “when it’s a good rifle in my price range that I can be certain about” and that’s whenever it comes along.

Have a great weekend!!

Thanks so much David. It’s a bit hard for me, which I’ve stated before in the early parts of this forum, but this is definitely the most fun I’ve had trying to obtain and antique.
I’ll just have to keep looking haha.
Thanks again!

Haha I just thought, we should change this thread to “The K98k hunt(with a sixteen year old that can’t make up his mind)” haha

Sounds like your showing great maturity for a 16 year old. It ain't easy to wait I know but this is a sizeable investment for you as well as others. Glad you came here and don't give up on checking this forum if the current one does not light your fire 100%

No matter what, this forum will always be something I look at. You guys are just so knowledgeable with a topic I love. Thanks for the maturity compliment. It means a lot coming from you guys

Hey guys, I have some pictures from this dealers. Tell me what you guys think

I see you are back with another Jimmee. To tell you the truth I am not likin what I see concerning the overall metal condition of the barrel-receiver. Looks a tad on the rough side. What is the asking price if I may ask? Would sure like to see you end up with one in fine condition. Sucks waiting but often well worth it.

This one is for sale locally. As of today he won’t accept anything less than $2k. The receiver pitting and metal condition are much worse then the pics show. PASS.

Yeah that's a big nope. I'm sure he's probably seen the outrageous 'sale' prices on Gunbonker or a few of the online stores and has convinced himself his piece is worth that. Unless he can borrow one of those overspending fools he'll likely die with it. Not trying to be rude but I don't think there's one person on this forum that would pay $2k for this.
