How I can tell if real or fake?

The best thing you can do is be patient….spend time here, reading about the K98k and getting to know what to look for. You’ll get a good idea of what features to look for, what reasonable prices are, and what the signs of rework or faking are.

There’s no “quick” way…you just have to take time to learn. The good news is they made millions of rifles - somthey’ll be out there when you’re ready! 😉

He shows no photos of serial numbers.... Regardless, it's not matching based off of certain components and it's priced high.

It takes research and doing your homework to instantly see what is correct and what isn't on 98k's. There are obvious things such as non matching serial numbers and those rifles are priced accordingly. No non-matching 98k should be anywhere near $2k...

I'd you're new to these rifles, I suggest avoiding Gunbroker. It's a minefield and you'll get burned if you don't know what you're looking at.

Thanks appreciate it. Just don't know a local source. Will do research. Thanks.

Doesn't have to be local. I always suggest buying one from another collector here on the forum. For the most part, guys here sell for honest prices and no BS gets by. If something posted in the trader section isn't right, it gets called out quickly. Of course, people can ask whatever they want, but overall, rifles are priced appropriately.

Thanks I will be patient and keep my eye out.

The picture sticky thread, this forum, and the Karabiner 98k books are the 3 best sources for what is correct on a matching K98k if that is what you're after. Research so that you know the general features and markings to look for and get to know the vast amount of changes made to K98ks over the years. Take the time to learn what is right vs what's wrong and be patient, it'll save you from getting burned. Also, you don't need to restrict yourself to local sellers, it took me 2 years to finally acquire a matching K98k locally as I've only seen 2 original, matching rifles in the past 4 years locally (and I own one of the 2). The forum trader is a good place to acquire an honest rifle and once you have the knowledge, you can start looking around online too.

I only know enough about K98k’s to be dangerous. Is it just me or does the rear barrel band (milled) look out of place for the period of the rest of the rifle? Shouldn’t it be stamped and welded?

It is not uncommon to occasionally find early milled parts on late guns. These "leftover" parts were used up along with later stamped parts during production. The sling band on this byf 44 is correct to this rifle and is serial numbered properly to this rifle IMHO. Just fyi, this is not my rifle.

@STG44AKGuy

Delete the link. We don't allow posting of live auction links. This is one of the few rules we really enforce and you've managed to break it.

Posting live auctions helps sellers and slimy flippers boost their bidding. If a "senior member" sent you the link, maybe you discuss it amongst yourselves.
Cool. Sorry about that.

Thanks for help.

The advice from the members here so far has all been fasntastic. Take your time, research, and get involved with the community. Thats half the fun. But just one other thing I wanted to point out to you…

Be careful on this forum with folks reaching out to you with guns to sell. There are scammers at work here, and you clearly are a new member looking to get a decent rifle, which makes you a bit of a target. So just be extra cautious, thats all.
