I am new to K98s and would appreciate help unravelling the story of this sporterized and mismatched Kar 98b.

Apparently I hit a file size limit. Sorry the overall photo didnt post. Barrell and receiver numbers match. Barrell doesnt seem to have been shortened but is only 24”

Try cropping the photos or email them to yourself and choose a smaller size. Then post those . You can put 15 photos in each post I think

It's one of the "blank receiver" Simson Kar98b-- looks to be a "b" suffix. Barrel acceptance is similar to an S28 rifle. There's a chance it could have been a depot rebuild of an kar98b that was rebarreled with a shortened s28 barrel (or the shortening was done later by Bubba or an importer). Hard to say though without a pic of the front sight.

Thanks Chris. Given that it has no collector value I’d still like to bring it back to original configuration (cosmetically). What would have been the original stock, bolt, etc? Same as Kar 98b?

when the barrel was shortened, the original 98b stock could have been altered, or it may have been fitted with a standard K98k stock. For a cosmetic restoration, I would go with an early flat buttplate stock, milled upper and lower bands and a K98k bolt to replace the current Czech VZ-24 bolt.

Yeah, my Gew98b was shortened at some point and I've just kept it as I bought it, in a late '30s Sauer 98k stock set. It serves the purpose well!
