Chunks of steel live alot longer then any of us ever will, including our children and grandchildren. These arent just any old chunk of steel however and are parts of history, enough time has passed where these rifles should be preserved in whatever state they lie in. Now if they are already sporterized, then go hog wild. As the damage has already been done. There are tens of thousands of sporterized k98ks out there in america alone that would make a great candidate for a sniper clone. The reason we have tens of thousands of these bubba k98k rifles is because people had the same mentality as you. Except most of them have the excuse of actually bringing the rifles to america and/or buying them for dirt cheap because they were dime a dozen.
The days of drilling and tapping virgin k98k receivers is long gone in my opinion. You could take your dot 44 that is partially mismatched and sell it and buy multiple rifles. No need to ruin what isnt ruined already.
On the topic of the actual mounting systems I think you are getting confused. Your scope setup is a double claw, but you want a turret style mount? Do you plan on buying another scope setup?
