I just purchased this scope for my 44 DOT.
It’s a HWD 4x’s

Is it the correct period?

If so, I do believe that it is a double claw mount.
It does not have the lower mounts included.

Can I find the period lower mounts? All I have found is repo’s?

I’d like to build a shooter, but before I go further, I’m asking the experts here.

Thank you for all y’all do. I really love this forum.

Regards,

William

No sir

I actually have two DOT 44's.
One is 100% matching. The other, the bolt, receiver and barrel match only.

I own an authentic Mark IV Enfield sniper that my son loves to shoot LR. It would be awesome to have a scoped Kar98 to shoot LR with him.

IMO it might be easier to just buy an already drilled and tapped K98. There's a ton out there and they're inexpensive and you wouldn't be permanently modifying a rifle.

Well, ill never sell the rifle, so I am not really worried about it.
I have a 100% one, so this other is more of a play toy.

What he meant is why destroy a good barreled action when you could buy like a russian capture or any other refurb rifle to do your built . Instead you could restore your matching barreled action dot44 .

Precisely, its' not my property but I would say it's a better idea to just buy one of those sporterized K98s that were done post-WWII as they're already drilled and tapped. You can find one cheap and just plop it in a K98 stock. That drilled and untapped Dot 44 still has good value and will retain its value until it gets drilled and tapped and in that case its value will drop like a stone.

The classic "ill never sell" line.

Chunks of steel live alot longer then any of us ever will, including our children and grandchildren. These arent just any old chunk of steel however and are parts of history, enough time has passed where these rifles should be preserved in whatever state they lie in. Now if they are already sporterized, then go hog wild. As the damage has already been done. There are tens of thousands of sporterized k98ks out there in america alone that would make a great candidate for a sniper clone. The reason we have tens of thousands of these bubba k98k rifles is because people had the same mentality as you. Except most of them have the excuse of actually bringing the rifles to america and/or buying them for dirt cheap because they were dime a dozen.

The days of drilling and tapping virgin k98k receivers is long gone in my opinion. You could take your dot 44 that is partially mismatched and sell it and buy multiple rifles. No need to ruin what isnt ruined already.

On the topic of the actual mounting systems I think you are getting confused. Your scope setup is a double claw, but you want a turret style mount? Do you plan on buying another scope setup?

Always good to get another perspective. Exactly why I love this community.

I was probably looking through the lens of I really do not care what happens after I'm gone.

Although I appreciate the weapon as a tool, I had not given as much thought to it as an historical keepsake.

My son the beneficiary of all my toys agrees the correct path would be to find a clean Russian capture and build from there.

I have been on Riverofguns.com, any other suggestions on where else to look?

Again, really appreciate your passion and perspective.

Wm

Yes. I plan on buying a different scope and returning the one I just purchased. I found a Carl Zeiss 6X's that I will purchase. This has no rings soldered, and I can try and find a good quality HT mounting system. I will post pics of the new scope before I buy, if you will take a look?

This is what I’m considering purchasing if you think it’s a better way to go.

Its stamped 18148, Carl Zeiss Jena, Zielsechs

A while back there is a local FFL that had a sporterized K98. IIRC it was drilled and tapped with a scope and the stock was cut down but past that no other major modifications were done. I'll pm you the place.

You should have no problem finding one that is already drilled. OR find a post war k98, they seem cheap, sub 600 bucks, that not many would cry about if you put a HT on it. I have thought about it with my post war czech.

Ok
I just purchased a tapped BRNO. It’s a ww2 conversion. Still has eagles and stamped dou 45.

Perfect for a HT mount, and I will not be tapping my dot.
Thanks everyone for bringing me to my senses. Lol

The stock is blonde and in great shape, but had that huge trigger guard.

I’m sure I can replace the trigger guard?

Awesome! Correct stamped triggerguards can be found. I believe numrich even has them. Really happy you decided to find one that was already tapped. Now the fun begins!

I’d like to thank the awesome members of this board that helped me through the process of building my faux “sniper” project.

At one point in the beginning of my quest I was considering mocking up one of my matching rifles into this build.

I am so glad you set me straight.

Then I was the complete neophyte trying to source optics. I made two incorrect purchases based on my limited knowledge, and both where completely wrong.

Again, you set me straight.

It’s been a great learning curve, and I really just wanted to give you my gratitude.
I feel that I am quite a bit more knowledgeable thanks to you all. I have much more to learn, but I have a fantastic new rig to take hunting this season.

She is extremely accurate.

I’ll send a few photos of my groupings at 100, 150 and 200 yds later.

Again, thank you

William
