The private asked- how can this vegetable mash every day be any good for us?
The other private replied- Ach- I paid attention! It has to be- they boiled the sh__ out of it. And with the top screwed on so tight, no vitamins could escape.

Seriously- I always let any cooks know I appreciated that 'up earlier than anyone else and in the rack later' work plan. Seems we always ended up in Graf/Hohenfels rotations in late fall/winter so it was a good place to work for them. Not so in June/July.

Two cookbooks H.Dv. 86 exist in 1933-1945. One date in 1938 and the last from 1941 is the larger one, with colored pictures with spice plants.
A lot of manuals and instructions involves about this catering subject.

I like the meat grinder bolted to the shelf and the thermos backpacks behind the rifle...

The goulash kanone was set up well behind the lines. When the cooking was done, the thermos backpacks were filled and the hot food would be carried to the troops on the front lines.

It's my understanding that there was typically only one hot meal served each day on the battlefield. Other meals would consist of bread, sausage, cheese, etc.... whatever could be carried by the soldier that would not spoil. This was supplemented by foraged fruit, wild game, and farm animals if available. Foraged food could be cooked in mess kits on Esbit stoves. I don't think the Germans had the equivalent of K-rations.

I also understand that the Germans typically filled their canteens with coffee, which they drank cold.

BTW, prior to the early 1940s most German books, manuals, and forms were printed in German Gothic script which can be pretty confusing if you're only used to reading Roman letters. For those of you who have trouble understanding German Gothic script, here is a handy guide to help you:

@jhv 41 Both manuals are not a part of the official H.Dv. 86. The manuals are independent instructions.
This is a official attachment to the field cook book H.Dv. 86. The attachment number 9.

Number 1-8 you find already in the print version from 1941. Number 8 is the picture with the spice plants.

The OKW was always trying to interject themselves into the daily operations of the Heer, Kriegsmarine, and Luftwaffe, even though they never really had direct authority over these branches. Well.....actually they did for like a week.............
