Fake duel code K98k

I am not particularly astute at spotting fakes. But if I were in a room full of fake K98's, I would nominate this fake as the fakest of all fakes. The deliberate fake water damage along the edge of the fake "capture document" is a nice but rather fake touch of fakeness to an otherwise very fake piece of fakeage.

Indeed it is Bobby but this rifle has already took someone for $2500. And now its up too $1000 and the auction is not even over yet. Who knows how many times this rifle has been sold before those two auctions even happen. Hell who knows how many more times it will be sold back and forth.

But what I'm happy too see Bobby? Is you see that this rifle is not real which means you are way above in knowledge compared too the poor souls who bought this rifle in the past.

The more you learn in this field the easier it will be too spot fakes. A fake like this should be flat out easy and most people should know better. But from what I have seen most don't seem too care and buy just because they want it.

There will come a time when a nice K98k rifle comes up for sale and you will have too use your own judgement. Its up too you too tell whats real and whats bogus.

Guys I can not believe it! This rifle sold again for $2125, with 25 bids on this junker. Insane and very stupid another fool was taken too the cleaners again.

Thats two people I have seen spend stupid money on something thats fake and a fantasy piece. Well over $4,000 now and thats just want we have seen in this year. No telling how many others have passed this rifle along like an expensive game of hot potato.

I think I understand what drives people to get taken by such fakery. I admit I have felt it myself. Authentic WW2 German items (all) are so sought after, and yet so expensive, that people search for those rare deals that pop up so rarely. When something comes into view that looks passably authentic, and more importantly within the buyer's budget, palms sweat, fingers tremble, and logic vanishes. If you take 2 or more people with the same symptoms for the same item, a bidding war starts. The bid-up that ensues is that elusive confirmation and reassurance to each bidder that it must be legit and a great deal, because other people want it too! When the dust settles, some unlucky sap wipes out his bankroll on a humped up piece that may be worth 1/3 or less of what he paid.

(Just my theory!)

That is exactly what I thought. Especially a newer collector bidding against someone with a 300+ gunbroker rating. Suddenly they have their confirmation that the item is legit. They want to believe it is legit so it doesn't take much.

I take the opposite route. German items scare me. As much as I may want something if I can't get confirmation from 2 other experienced collectors that the item is legit and worth it I won't touch it.

I think that fear will serve you well. I have been hosed on helmets twice, and am slowly starting to have a bit more of a learned eye for such things. Second and third opinions are always good, it just becomes problematic when that attic or garage sale item pops up out of nowhere and a dozen people are hovering their mouse over the buy it now button.

It might be just making lemonade out of lemons, but having limitations and some restraint can make the game more fun. If a collector has an unlimited bankroll, there is nothing more to it than to locate the desired items and buy them without regard for price. I would compare it to some of the classic car auctions on TV. Old men bidding high 5 digit to 6 digit figures on unbelievable cars, and seem bored while doing it. I don't ever want to be like "Yawn...another ss helmet.... yawn..another bringback Luger....yawn... I did a bunch of research and lurking before I committed a pile of money on a Luger, and I am now thrilled to have it!

I agree. I jump through all kinds of hoops to get both good deals and rare items. Many times I have purchased items online overseas off different auction sites and forums. My H.S. and College German Classes have somewhat come in handy and Finnish I think I am almost able to recognize words within the giant strings of letters lol. Google Translate is a God Send.

I've also passed on good deals and rare items because I wasn't positive about the validity. I've kicked myself a couple times, but knock on wood I haven't been burned yet. Buying a fake would bother me more than missing out on a rare piece at a good price. A couple times including just recently I took a shot, but the price was low enough to justify the gamble.

Anyone with deep enough pockets can go on Simpsons or Rock Island Auction and get a top notch hard to find item. It is the hunt and finding the deals that keeps me interested.
