Well I meant to say not a fake, reproduction with the fake stamps and all that. Bare with me I'm new to the forum, wanting to learn more about the mauser

For your 1st lesson, picture 4 of 28 shows numbers stamped on the side of the stock. The Germans did not number the stock like this. The pinged eagles combined with the stock numbers indicate post war use by another country. It is a wartime German Mauser, but these features make it less desirable and worth less. The import mark tells you it’s not a bring back. So the seller is showing you all about it, it’s up to you to know more about what he’s selling.
It is a minefield.

Thank you Biggymu, but yeah I definitely prefer the eagles and a non import marked Mauser. You know that's what I've been hearing about gun broker on the Mausers it's very hit and miss. I was actually thinking to myself I'm probably gonna try and get one off here when i get more money saved up. And zeppelin thanks for the advice, I'm definitely gonna take your advice on buying one (maybe a few 😀) mausers off here. But I appreciate the tips guys

Mike,
You are doing a smart thing by learning in advance. Here is a link to the picture reference. These are best quality examples to compare with a prospective purchase. It is not uncommon for a rifle to be renumbered to look original (some of the fakes are pretty damn good). If you have any doubts and need a second opinion when you are ready to purchase, send a PM to one of the staff members and have them look it over for you.
Good luck!

Biggymu, thank you so much for that link. I'm definitely gonna have to get my note book out and take notes but like you said the fakes look pretty damn good too, but being new to k98s it's like a minefield just don't want to step on the Mines lol. But I'll be studying this chart and I appreciate the link.

Yeah you are definitely right remfan, I hardly know anything about the k98 outside of the buttery smooth bolt. Biggymu sent me that link and I'm trying to study it and like he said, even the fakes are pretty darn good and it's hard to distinguish them between a real one to a fake one(may not be to yall but it's definitely for me right now) at first I thought they all had a 4 digit serial number (the last 4 are on the parts yes) but I thought it was only 4 digits all together. I'm just so confused it's really gonna be a tough nut to Crack well to me anyways right now. I really thank yall for helping and steering me I to the right direction.

Mike,
also think about your goals in collecting. do you want a cool old rifle? for shooting? as an investment? have just one or several? (WARNING: K98k collecting is known to be addicting & cause FINANCIAL HARM by the state of California!)
unless you’re flush w/$$$, consider starting off with a mismatched or russian capture rifle. (lower end of $$$) Then as you learn & understand the differences, you’ll appreciate the really nice rifle you’ll find later. I still have my 1st Mauser, & tho sportered, it has open sights I can use! (1909 Argentine cavalry carbine)

+1 Still have my first which is a RC byf 43. It has taken a couple deer and I still love it. It sports a USGI black sling.

And for what it's worth it WAS a 'handsome' RC. :ROFLMAO: If anyone has been following along, I think there are some RCs that are quite 'handsome' and some that well for lack of a better word look like a$$
