1916 Spandau Gew.98 Polish Rework by FB Radom

Hello there ENDER,

It looks like you have another Gew.98 Polish Rework by FB Radom. Nice Polish proofed stock as well! What I think is peculiar is that your stock has Polish markings, but I don't see the hardwood dowel above the triggerguard area, nor do I see finger grooves, as this is typical of the Wz.98 and Wz.98a's (I think). I just checked a few reference books and all of the Wz.98 nor Wz.98a examples and period photos show finger grooves. Interesting....

Are you missing a bolt? It looks like you have an aftermarket trigger setup on it as well?

Can you post more photos of the markings on the bolt components (and both sides of the bolt body)? The photos are blurry and tough to make out.

It looks like an imperial German sear with a modified trigger.

Thanks,as a summary i have a reworked gew 98,first reworked by German armourer during the war, afterwards refurbished by FB Radom,so as a whole it is not cobbled together at random?

I am not familiar enough with Imperial German armorer markings to confirm that part of it was refurbished by an armorer, however I do see the Polish rework markings from FB Radom on the receiver, and I see that the barrel is Polish. The stock is Polish marked but it strangely doesn’t have any Polish features, so maybe a Polish reworked German Gew98 stock from WWI. The bolt may have just been a spare German bolt lying around at FB Radom that was paired with this rifle. The trigger assembly was modified post war, maybe by an owner in the US. That is all I can conclude from the photos.

Very interesting rifles!! I got one of these myself, which was captured by the Wehrmacht and issued again with a new long barrel. The original SN wasn't cancelled there and now I wonder when they cancelled the number and when not.

hello,i have this additional question : should the rifle be classified as collectable or shooter in your or other peoples opinion? Have added a picture of the bore as clear as possible .

Thanks

hello, the people who answered me can certainly answer to the point(unlike me:unsure:).I had answers on 2 different forums under the same header : one here and others on imperial period forum
if you want to directly ask them there you can see the names.

Telperion,

I have one like that too:

Was the original serial number retained on the receiver, but with a "K" appended to it?

Yes, indeed!

To me it is a collectible rifle for sure. Replace the post war trigger assembly with original Imperial parts and you are good to go.
(trigger replacement should be handled by a competent gunsmith) if you decide to go that route , I probably have the parts you need.
