Zielsechs scope question

Hi guys, probably a silly question (apologies:facepalm:) does this scope have windage adjustments (L & R) and if so where is it located/how does it work? The elevation wheel and focusing works fine. My experience with scopes only extends to modern leupolds, lol. Cheers :happy0180:

Nope...

All windage is in the mounts,as with any scope that has only one adjustment turret/wheel/knob.

And no question is a silly question if you are in search of knowledge...otherwise how would you learn..?

Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

I'm in the process of building a K98 sniper clone (for my own enjoyment only, of course, not for the purpose of passing if off as "genuine" and trying to sell it)

I'm going with the SSR mount (even though the combo is probably not correct I have no choice because of the scope I have) did the SSR have windage adjustment and if so, was it the type 2 or 3?

I've seen a few on Accumounts and Ebay but am unsure..

Thanks again for the words of wisdom

All the ssr types have windage..

The zielsechs would be correct for the lsr should you decide to go in that direction.

Any particular reason you have chosen the ssr mounting system...?

Just personal preference I assume...you like the look ?

The lsr will probably stand up the recoil hammering of the 8mm round a little better.

It has more base attached to the receiver which helps spread the recoil force....my 2 cents

If you arent concerned with it being a representative example ,anything you want to use for a scope or mount will be fine.

The zielsechs was also used in the turret mounts if you want to try and match the scope to a "correct "mounting system..

If you are planning on removing the scope and mount from the gun frequently i find that the LSR removes and reinstalls a little easier and holds zero a little better upon remounting...but then again could just be my set up.

Dont be too tempted to doing the mounting of the bases yourself unless you are somewhat accomplished @ such things...Being just a little off will screw you permanently....and dont think that just anyone who calls themself a gunsmith can do it correctly.

You will want someone who has a lot of experience with k98s.

Thanks for the reply/info, once again.

I have attached pics of my scope.

It is a post-war scope, aluminium with ugly rails on the bottom. Vaughn advised me when I got it (posted another thread when I got it asking info on it) that when the rails are removed I can only use a SSR mount as the LSR, HT, LT etc would be unsuitable due to it's particulars.

I would love to go the LSR and get it as correct as possible, if it's feasable.

Cheers :happy0180:

Ahh....Yes...I remember that post and your quandry.

And if Vaughn told you that the ssr was your only option then you can take it to the bank.

Have you considered reselling the scope and purchasing another in an attempt to expand your options..?

Just a thought..

Might set you back a little on your timeline ,but this whole thing will take longer than you think anyway...trust me.

Vaughn would be your man for the machine work also.

Another thing...in the event you decide you are going to purchase a different scope and go with the lsr ...try to avoid any scope that has a rear focus adjustment as the tightening of the rear band will bind up the focus dial...Not saying you couldnt work around it but why deal with it if you dont have to

LSR scopes were rear focus free ...Khales/Ajack 4x90/Hensoldt ...so you wil want the same also...good reason to use a Zeiss

A nice little zielvier just sold on ebay about 5 min ago for 209.00....so you can get a good deal if you are patient.

Thanks for the insight,

Yes I have read posts from others stating he is the authority on stuff like this. :hail:

Shame I'm in Australia, though lol. I would love someone like that to put it together for me, however I wouldn't feel right asking him to, considering he doesn't know me from a bar of soap, lol.

I'm in no hurry, I purchased the Zielsechs because I saw it and that's my scope of choice (got a soft spot for Zeiss scopes, and also the magnification). I haven't found a K98 to stick it on either, yet. I already have one, though I won't be playing with it-too nice for that. Just waiting for a mis-match to come along that is stil in original condition.

Wow, only $209?? I thought original scopes went for alot more than that?
How would a layman such as myself tell if it is the real deal, not a post-war or repro (aside from the obvious indicators- condition, tube diameter, those damn ugly rails, etc)

Best Regards,

Chris. :happy0180:

All the indicators you mentioned are all you need...not to say there arent imitators of zeiss but they are blatantly obvious.

Serial # would be one indicator of postwar/war time/prewar....seems like 80K,or thereabouts, was end of wartime production for zielsechs...but I could be off somewhat...again vaughn would be your man for that info...he maintains a serial database on scope manufacturers.

Just keep an eye out on ebay and gunbroker...religiously...I once saw a nice zielsechs sell for 252.00 on ebay one nite...couldnt believe it.

Patience is the key in these things...

Vaughn does not need to know you personally to do your machine work...he works on guns from all over the country and rarely meets the customer.
The only impediment for you might be the cost of shipping the gun both ways from australia.

Seems like there are a couple of other aussies on this board and over @ ww2 weapons who might be able to point you to a G-smith on continent in your neck of the woods...I would inquire if I were you.

Good luck with your project..

No worries

Haha, thanks, I dare say I will need it :googlie

Thanks again for the advice, much appreciated.

Best Regards

Chris.
