Good condition maker marked GNL primed steel bottle, good condition primed and painted GNL steel cup dated 1943, good condition supple black one piece leather strap, fair condition cover has large tear and ripped top button and all are rusted but function. GNL is an interesting maker with undated bottles but dated cups, and all appear to have early single piece straps.

Thoughts on my example? I like the webbing on the closure strap but it seems a bit short going over the cup.

Via direct message, Can I get a closeup of the MPD code on the top and a picture of the inside of the canteen cup? It is not uncommon for these to be too short, you see it alot on early coconuts, or on canteens that the original aluminum/steel cups were swapped to the taller bakelite cup.

Sure! Here is the top of the cup and the inside although there are no internal markings.

First time seeing that digit on the side of instead of inside the cup, but is a nice original by an unknown maker with Sawdust material.

Excellent condition 1944 dated and maker marked MN round late stamp primed steel bottle, very good condition painted and primed "second pattern" MN43 marked steel cup, these are seen on late MN1944 and sku1945 marked canteens and are likely a rejected batch of 1943 made cups that were later refinished due to the later pattern dark green paint (compared to the earlier olive green), note stretch marks from stamping and weld spatter on cup handles that likely led to initial rejection, excellent condition gabardine cover, excellent supple black pigskin leather late type two piece strap marked RBNr. 0/0485/0002 indicating production at Franz Brehme, Walsrode (Hanover). Cap is uncommon early Type 1 pattern.

Very good condition OHW (Otto Honsel-Werke, Aluminiumwerk, Werdohl) marked canteen dated 1940 on the bottle, cap, strap, cover, and hook with a 1939 dated cup, 1 year deviations are very common, bottle is excellent, cover retains ink stamps for both factory and cover subcontractor EA, strap is supple and intact with uncommon ink stamp, bottom strap has a name carved into the leather.
