In 1987 I identified an Israeli mauser at the importer in Maryland(Armscorp) marked SwjXE....and a tgf...didn't know what they were at the time... Out there somewhere.
I love that guy for not immediately running for the wire brush to start "cleaning it up"!

As much as I would like to see it go to a collectors home it would result in in-fighting like you said. Unfortunately, it going to auction will result in it most likely going to someone with a big wallet but no sense or even serious interest in the rifle. It'll most likely vanish from the collectors world for a few years/decades until the new owner sells it or kicks the bucket.

Hopefully he comes to this forum. I sent a message to him to come here for more advice and maybe an accurate price of worth. Maybe he'd let another collector here buy it.

That was my comment, which I’d stand by. And Farb typed what I was alluding to... several of these pop up every year... there are more out there than we know of. there are very few k98s that I would even consider “fairly rare” so that’s saying something

interesting subject... mint and rare are two way overused terms in the collecting field..
Not to change the subject but, how many are known roughly ? Farb as been eluding to tracking these was just curious the number.. ??
A few of these turn up each year ??? Geez.. cant say i recall the last one posted ?
There are also a few big foot and nessy sighting each year as well....
I like the terms Near mint and fairly rare... they are way toned down....
Also to confuse even more... the rifle is fairly common... the marking is exceedingly scarce.

The serial range of swjXE seems to grow every year. In the last 10 years or so since they appeared to come out of nowwhere, we have seen at least 1 a year. The range is now from 5500T - 6500T, and I expect that range will grow over time. I do try to collect all of the ones I see, but I know good and well some are discovered and hidden away in collections, as a few I've recorded almost made it by me without any knowledge. I know that because of that there have been more than I see. If you ask me, nearly every single one made came back to the US through souvenir hunting GI's, and more are out there. Its incredible that they have not been seen before- I think they have for the last 70 years, but have been classified as postwar by the collectors that saw them, maybe even misread as svwMB since the French guns are so well known. I do call them rare, but these are not unobtainable. If you can find one in the rafters of a house, or one just randomly pops up in a local estate auction, they are out there in number. We all just desire one so bad we feel they are unobtainable, but I know people who have obtained them with reasonable money. That first auction of 20k still haunts the internet searches which also spoils the conversations about them.
