What exactly do I have

Need help from the experts. I received this from a ww2 vet’s son. It has gew98 on it and has several Nazi markings. Is it unusual to still have those markings on it?

This is how I recieved the weapon. I was thinking about getting a k98 stock for it but it does have some history attached to it as is. The vet that had this was a bronze star recipient for action in GERMANY.

Yes, does look like it was a Vz24 stock that was altered at the grip postwar. Hard to say what connection the stock has to the rifle, as it could have been added at any point in time. Is there still a handguard lip on the front edge of the rear sight? That may have been ground off to fit it into this stock.

And how about a pic of the markings on the top of the receiver....

I saw that it appeared to be a vz stock and recall there was a depot rifle (not a build) that was fitted with such a stock. I see that it's significantly altered in these new photos which is a shame.

That may be, but this one seems to have a K98k rear sight base rather than the Vz style. Would need to see what was done under the handguard.

The receiver is pre-war Amberg (02-06); probably wartime (WW2) ordnance build (of a salvaged G98 receiver) but I do see issues that are inconsistent.

Too bad the alterations, - pre-war Ambergs are rare, HZa builds are a fascinating study too, history and idiots have ruined this rifle.

I had to check the bible this morning and found this regarding depots... "These rifles could be fitted with new parts and some used/reclaimed components. Reclaimed components could consist of any Mauser system rifle parts that would fit the K98l rifle, including components from Czech VZ.24 rifles, Gew.98 rifles and a myriad of other rifles captured by the Germans."

Later in the chapter is a rifle with the caption "660 1940 Posen Disaster" which has a modified VZ.24 stock fitted. Obviously not the same scenario as presented here.

Many captured arms were placed on a curb and run over, breaking the stock at the wrist. This might have been brought back broken instead of duffel cut.
