Wartime pictures of StG family of rifles

I think the whole Colt / AR thing was about corruption. We could have ended with a scaled down FAL in .280. That would basically have put us where we are now with 6.5 and 6.8. That system would have been superior to the AR in adverse conditions like Vietnam. Almost 60 years later the AR platform is OK, serviceable. The first AKs and AKMs are as serviceable today as they were 60 years ago.
If you go back even further the 276 Pedersen was far superior to 30-06. Famous as to why we kept it. The M1 in 276 Pedersen was a vastly superior weapon. Springfield supposedly still has the drawings but I can’t pry into getting access.

The FAL won the trials and no one can change my mind. If I had the backing I’d make H&R’s and T-20’s like some of the folks make 44’s and FG-42’s.

I don’t know if those will count. Polish post war anti communist partisans.

Don't forget the CETME either. The first designs were in 8mm Kurz and then changed to 7.62 CETME and later 7.62 NATO because of Bundesgrenzschutz requirements that stemmed from NATO that stemmed from the US being hung up on full fat rifle rounds.

I've always wondered how a 8mm Kurz G3 would handle. I bet it would be delightful, especially compared to the rather robust experience that you get shooting a full sized rifle cartridge out of a roller delayed blowback system.
