There are original to the period Volkssturm identification disks (erkennungsmarken). Some are the typical oval shape while others are a small round variation depending on the issuing authority. Examples are shown in W. Darrin Weaver's Desperate Measures: The Last-Ditch Weapons of the Nazi Volkssturm reference work; some of which are from my personal collection. I would suspect that some or even many Volkssturm troops were never issued an identification tag.
