I'm not going to suggest you fire it, but have you tried running some snap caps through it?

I'm really curious how well the system feeds and cycles, especially with that rudimentary bolt. Looking at the stock and receiver where the magazine is in play I can't imagine the feed angle is precisely controlled, so I imagine there would be a fair bit of drag chambering, at least compared to something like a 98 action. Is it something that you could actually work at speed, or is it considerably slowed down when actually feeding a round?

Well .. at least to me the barrel reminds me of the K.43 barrel. Contour, proof and being pressed and then pinned in place. Not surprised that it therefore uses the K.43 magazine too, and as a result to this the feed angle may work too. To my understanding Walther developed this rifle, they were also in charge of K.43, so would fit from this side too.

thank you for the write up and excellent photo shoot. Curious that it’s such a PITA to assemble, a K98k isn’t particularly difficult.

I imagine this was never Intended to last long at all, just a stop gap measure to get something into the field and then be tossed once things settled down/better equipment to be issued opportunity. Reminds me of a M1903 that was a school rifle (or national match, been several years since I seen the post) on Hawaii when December 7th happened and every government caliber small arm was being rounded up and pressed into service again on the island because of fears, of a Japanese naval force invasion.
