Turd Alert: Honker Spotting: bnz 43 " single rune " 8187

Uhmm. . . I'm a bit new to these contract guns, but what jumps out to me:

-Letter blocked serial number on receiver
-Army acceptance stamp on receiver
-Different fonts on the bolt

:faint:

Correct, the rune is definitely a new addition.
Sadly, these imbeciles ruined "runed" what appears to have been a nice Heer 98k that was all matching except the bolt. :faint:

The front band looks fine to me. The bolt, eh, not so much. The rune, eh.

One of these things is not like the other. Spot the problems.

I get the rune difference, but what is the issue with the bolt? I'm guessing it's the way the numbers are oriented (the real numbers slanted and the fake more upright)? Still trying to learn, so detailed posts like these are great!

The rune difference is a problem, but the least of them. The bolt numbers look nothing like an original, so their slant is not relevant. It's like if you got a possum airbrushed with black spots laying down next to a Dalmatian puppy which was sitting and were discussing which was the real Dalmatian puppy. While the difference would be that one is laying down and one is sitting, there are far more glaring deficiencies.

Ditto

I pointed this one out to Ham....so I see some bad things...bolt shroud has been ground down and filled back up. Look at the discoloration. Plus other issues...:biggrin1:

Yes, tks Jack. We have an obligation to point these things out to keep everyone, including dealers, diligent. The problem with a turd is it gets tossed back and washes up on the beach somewhere else. One turd can thus continue to do damage and harm the hobby as it gets tossed about. Better to stop it from getting passed around. Better to make sure it is known that if you get a turd you'll be stuck with it. A rising tide raises all ships, or shits.

Surely some collectors part of this forum know Tom. Does anyone ever contact him and let him know something looks suspicious? Ive heard mostly good things about legacy and heard he knows more about pistols than he does these rifles.

I contacted him today.

Great point Jack. Beyond the subject rifle for some reason fakers have a very hard time with this edge. Because of how it was originally cut I think most don't take the time to get it just right... and it shows. Often.

While certainly very relevant and something to look for, I’ve found that shroud flat can vary among originals. Far harder is the bolt flat, rear of the striker, and safety.

Perhaps a consignment someone tried to straw sell through the dealer. It’s immortalized here as a humpjob so if it turns up again we’ll have history on it.

It is marked SOLD on their website. I guess someone got soaked badly!

Well, they'll be stuck with it because anyone who does any research will know it is a fake. Someone will get stuck with it and the lesson for them will be the most lasting.
