Tasteful Gew.98M modifications?

Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm looking forward to the input.

There's a Gewehr 98M that I've come across that's been converted to 7.62 NATO and fitted with what appears to be a reproduction long side rail mount, I will post a link to it at the end of this post.

My questions are, firstly from a history-lover's perspective, how much should this be condemned?
To my knowledge this configuration is completely ahistorical, and I'm curious how much the original value of the rifle has been damaged.

Secondly, what are the options practically, were I to purchase it, to use the rifle for target shooting?
Things to know such as optics options, mount quality, potential weakening of the receiver wall, ammunition to use, possibly of converting back to 7.92x57mm etc.

Any and all comments are welcome.

History wise, not worth much. Gew 98 receiver, 98M style rear sight, 98b/98k style bolt. If you wanted it for whatever reason, I'd leave it as 7.62 NATO. Then again, if I was looking for a 7.62 milsurp, personally I would rather an Israeli 98k. Greater resale value for the future.

I'm not explicitly looking for a 7.62 Milsurp, this just came across me and I found it interesting.
I know it's not an authentic setup in the slightest, but it could be fun.

I also saw this advertised.

I am by no means a Puritan, but I must confess that I think it’s a bit of an abomination.

There are a few K98k, G98 and G98b examples with good bores on sale in the UK at present - well, compared to what’s usually available at any rate - so this would be a firm pass for me.

Another point to consider is this has no scope installed currently so it cannot be checked against the iron sights. A scope will only adjust so far if the install is not good.

It's also sitting in what I believe is a South American Mauser stock.

I would have to pass personally but if your looking to shoot 308 out of an old Mauser I guess this checks that box ...

I must admit my first reaction to it was

That's a good point to make, and as far as I can tell the mount is a reproduction, so an extra possible layer of complication there.

With Turks bringing 400 to 600 USD , I like it for the price . It would make a fun shooter . The long barrel would give more pep to the .308 and tame the recoil and muzzle blast . I like the " original type look " not all cut up , and the scope mount . Unless it is really , really off , that type of mount has a lot of adjustment .

My thinking too, someone's beat me to it though, it went quickly :ROFLMAO:.
