Suspicious Looking Pre-Alpha VIS35

Another younger collector reached out to me to evaluate a potential VIS35 purchase he was interested in. He only had a couple of photos from the seller, but I wrinkled an eyebrow after looking at some of these and I wanted to get a second opinion.

From my understanding of German occupation (pre alpha) pistols, frame serial 00000 doesn't make sense from a serial number perspective (should be starting at “001”). Additionally I suspect that the frame is possibly sanded and refinished.

Slide seems to be serial number "10"? The format looks odd. There are no german WaA77 or firing proofs on the slide either which is odd.

I think it shouldn't have a lanyard loop for a pre-alpha.

Equally odd is that there was a 2012 RIA auction for a suspiciously similar serial:

I asked the guy to ask seller for more detailed photos in natural outdoor lighting, as the indoor lighting leads to inconsistent photos (tough to tell if barrel is blued or not). The current owner is not a “gun guy” and is an older guy who inherited it from his dad, so I would not expect amazing pro photographer photos.

Anyway, my gut is telling me to tell this guy to walk away from this one. At seller’s asking price of $3,200, it is too much of a risk.

Additional thoughts/opinions?

I would post this on lugerforums if you haven’t already. I don’t have the York Radom book with me to glance through but this looks to be some type of German production test/prototype pistol as you noted with lack of proofs. I don’t see any obvious refinish indicators. Is the stock slotted? The finish on early pistols didn’t hold up well, could explain the slide. Was probably sitting in a leather holster for a while. They did blue barrels early on, it appears blued to me from these photos.

As far as price, when you get into a very specialized item of any type, price can increase drastically but number of buyers decreases drastically. Asking price could be a deal if someone needs this for their collection. This would be a very advanced item for a collection though, and the people willing to buy it may want better condition for the price. So it could be a great deal, or possibly not. Hope someone can give more clarity than I can.

I said it on the other forum, but it's a neat period pistol IMO. Some sort of test piece ( ammo testing, training factory shooters, etc.)

Sweet, thank you. I know there are a lot of people here that are not necessarily members there. Thats a cool Radom. Period commercially proofed for some reason…..the thread about commercial rifles for ammo testing comes to mind.

Yeah not really my “cup of tea” if I am being honest. Something for the niche hardcore VIS collectors to fight over.
