Stop Touching Recoil Lugs - Gew 98

There's a lot more going on than just crudely trying to get a screw out. It appears as though the counter bored part of the hole for the action screw has been filled with something.

I take those off too. Never once have I messed them up.

Every time I take them off, I always find rust underneath the grips. Its become a habit now to clean underneath them.

Yeah, I've been working through a project for the last year or so where I do a full (as in full) disassembly of all my guns and do a really good deep cleaning. I've cleaned up a lot of old grime and more than a little rust in some really out of the way nooks and crannies. The inside of the pockets for trigger springs on Mauser designs and under buttplates in general are the two stand outs so far. I suspect it's basically any place that water could pool or wick.

The key is to have the right tools, move slowly, and if you don't know what you're doing find out how to do it.

Also practice on your crap guns before tackling a nice one.

Ten bucks says that somewhere along the line someone didn't have the locking screws and was annoyed by the action working itself loose under recoil. There was a guy at a gun club a few moves ago who I was friendly with who had a habit of staking the action screws on RC's in place to "solve" that problem.

Looks like this bubba just did it with JB weld or something.
