SS Short Side Rail sniper

Here are pictures of the SS/SSR that I had mentioned in an earlier thread.
I acquired this rifle quite a few years ago from a man in New Jersey, the brother of a veteran who had recently passed. The story, to the best of my recollection, was that the GI had been a US sniper during the war. Following the end of hostilities, this veteran had found common ground with a German counterpart and they traded rifles. It was in the possession of this GI until his death. The brother had taken it to a local gun store to see if it could be sporterized! The gunsmith informed the man of its rarity and they put it on GB. One of the few, saved from the ravages of Bubba.

Some more pics. You will note the underside of rear sight is numbered 6066, most likely a mistake.

Last ones. The hand guard has a layer of grease in it I have never cleaned out.

That is an awesome rifle. I had always seen it in books. I did not realize the bolt matched as well during all these years of looking at it in the various books. A lot of these other SS conversions have mis-match parts. It is great to see all the aspects of the rifle. The books never showed everything about it. A lot here to cover. This is the best SS Conversion SSR in the world known to exist as far as I'm concerned.

Edit: I did not know about rear sight, but yes a mistake. Adds to the authenticity.

Brian knows a ton more than I but I agree fully with everything he said. Awesome!!!

Your comments shock me. I knew it was a nice example but had no idea. When I bought this, I had to take out a second mortgage on my house! Thank you for the compliments and feedback. As corny as it sounds, before I had the internet and there were no forums, had no circle of friends, my collection was trying to find an example similar to each group in “BBOTW. This was the only one I had ever seen come up for sale.
As mentioned earlier everything comes full circle. DaveR actually beat me to this rifle and for whatever reason, passed on it at that time. He contacted me shortly thereafter realizing it was good and we’ve been friends for years. It was through him, I learned of this forum and the book efforts of Mike and Bruce. So, to my friend whom I owe so much, I give thanks.

One of the finest and rarest rifles I have seen. If you could only own one collectible rifle....

Big congratulations to the OP and thanks for sharing!

Well there's not much left to be said! An exceptionally rare gun in exceptional condition! Just stunning and a grail gun for sure!
