SS Contract BNZ 43 Rune 2427 SS Depot Rework

This rifle generated quite a bit of buzz here on the forum when the auction was going on. As promised here is the post on it. The photos were just good enough to make an educated purchase, but I must admit it was a long wait to receive the rifle and have the grey areas answered. I talked to several members here before bidding and decided to go for it. It’s an early SS contract bnz43 triple rune if you will…. Receiver, Trigger guard and floor plate are marked with a rune which really appeals to me. You can tell it’s an early SS contract rifle with the firing proof and the serial number placed on the receiver. This rifle in its original form really resembles rifle #4903 on page 742-743 in volume 2b. This rifle in the picture index is also close in features:

The grey areas started with the distinctive keel numbers in the stock. Not standard for an SS contract. Also the floor plate was numbered 27, also not standard…. Everyone here that I was having conversations with about this auction thought that it was a rework of a bnz43 rune contract rifle. After getting the rifle and going over it, this is what me with the help of other’s here have come up with:
The rifle is an early bnz43 rune SS contract rifle that was likely sent to an SS depot, likely the same depot that did SSZZA4 reworks hence the acid etched 27 in the gas shield, cocking piece and also the bolt stop, that looks to be numbered as well. It was likely sent to the depot for a repair for a broken stock. The rifles stock is a WaAc10 armorers replacement, see the photo. The stock was marked on keel like early SS depot rifles with the serial number and the stock has a reused bayonet lug. The depot also stamped 27 on the floor plate and the follower, also not original to the original build. The rifle also seems to have sight work. There is a non numbered but waffed sight ramp, the sight ladder is numbered 958 where 98m’s sight ramps are numbered as well as the ladder is numbered on both sides possibly early style numbers?…. Early reused sight ladder? Also the rear sight slider detent is a e/655 armorers part. The front sight blade is also double indexed. Enjoy the photos a please comment on any thoughts about the rifle or the reworking…..

Gosh you’d almost think they could have put little fingertip grooves on the bolt release with machining marks like that. That’s up there in the most interesting ones that I’ve seen.

Jory I agree with your assessment.

And I just want to say…one of the coolest rifles I’ve seen on in here in a long time. Just incredibly excellent! Thanks for sharing it with us.

With the electro etched bolt parts, it seems clear that it was reworked at the depot that did the sszza4 guns, my guess is still Kurmark for that.

It goes down as the only SS contract rifle I’ve ever seen reworked. Very nice early SS contract with a twist!

Congrats on such a unique rifle, it's definitely a serious contender for the centerpiece for your collection! One has to wonder what that rifle saw to have been sent back for depot work
