(SNIPER) I have a few questions to ask to help decide the fate of this Mauser

I'm trying to help a neighbor sell a gun they have no info on that he inherited and wants to sell . I have a few questions as followed... (1) it's been sportized and looks to be a ex-sniper rifle and what is it's rough value as it sits. (2) are the claw mounts on the gun original to WW2 and is this a REAL ex-sniper ? (3) if it's real sniper rifle would it bring more money to put back an original bolt and find another stock to raise the value and if so what would it be worth then (without scope) ? Some info on the gun, the metal is good no major rust, numbers do not match on parts. its does have the Nazi proof marks. A local gunsmith told them it was worth $1,600 as is but I find that hard to believe being so sportized . I'm just looking for the course of action to take with this gun and I will not be offended with any suggestions . I'm just trying to help them out.... I can take more pics if needed thanks much, David Pietroski

(1) Value..? Hard to say...Not much I would think..been vandalized pretty heavily.
(2)Dont believe it to be a real ex sniper ..never seen that configuration on the mounts.
(3)Even if it was a real sniper..too much alteration has been done to give it any real restoration to is value.
(4) 1600...! ON what planet.?
(5) Put it on Gunbroker for 100 bucks and see what happens.

Caveat...I am not an expert...but mismatched parts, sported stock, spooned bolt handle, flattened receiver rings does not bode well for value.

Some of the work on the receiver rings seems reminisicent of earlier mounts on gew 98's....perhaps it is some rare variation that someone will come along and prove me wrong on.

Sorry...you did ask for honesty.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Antique-Ger...1&pid=100005&rk=2&rkt=6&sd=251802567539&rt=nc I did find a claw attachment that did match the mounts.. I just want to be sure what to tell them this weekend when I see them. thanks for the info

The style of mount on the gun is known as a Single Claw...but there are a few different vartiants.

And the variant on the gun is not the single claw that is seen on period WW2 k98 snipers.

I have not seen a gun with the rear claw so far forward on the receiver...but then again ..I have not seen them all.

And dont forget...those rings shown in the link may not work with those mounts.

There are many variations on the theme with double claw mounts as many custom smiths made their own...it is a crap shoot to pick up a set of mounts that will match a set of bases on civi rifles.

I honestly don't believe that rifle is a K98, maybe a GEW 98M because of it's rear sight. In that, the barrel is much to long for it to be a k98's and the stock, although sported simply isn't a k98's. Yet, I'm not sure totally sure it's a chopped GEW's stock. The scope mounts could be WW1, only because the Germans used endless types of scopes & mounts on their GEW's.

However, if I had to bet, I'd say it's more than likely a Post WW2 cigarette gun, because most were build using GEW 98's.

The receiver, at least, is from a K98k. The Gewehr 98s were marked "Gew 98" on the left side receiver rail, while K98ks were marked "Mod 98". As seen in the third photo in the OP, this rifle is marked "Mod", with the remainder obscured by the single claw mount.

here are some more pics...it deff says Mod 98 but the grooved stock and lack of lug stumped me. maybe a combo of the two guns?

The serial and suffix on the barrel looks like it could have started as a dot code, IMO.
Post war cigarette gun.

Barrel markings are from a dot 1944 to be exact. They didn't make sniper rifles so you can be sure that you are not dealing with any type of original sniper assembly.

sorry to say all you have is a poorly made sporterized k98k. Some post war made custom rifle exhibit great craftsmanship. This one does not. Without the optic's its really not worth more than a few hundred bucks..
