Seeking K98 Wood Stock Information

I recently purchased a wooden K98k stock which was described by the seller as being a K98k Stock that was re-worked by the Yugoslavians. It appears to be a solid walnut stock with a "WaA109" Waffenamt (but perhaps I could be wrong) marking on the right side of the butt stock below the takedown disk. Any and all information regarding the legitimacy of this stock is welcome. I have a sporterized byf 43 project that is need of a new stock. Would a solid walnut stock be proper for this rifle as well? I'm trying to restore the byf 43 to its former glory with an accurate stock that doesn't break the bank. Any advice regarding the stock and/or byf 43 restoration is welcome. Thank you!

IIRC (& maybe not) the Yugos replaced bad barrels on captured K98ks w/theirs when needed, thats when they’d shorten an original stock. A K98k barrel is 600mm/23.62” long, the replacement barrels were 590mm/23.25” long, 10mm/3/8-7/16” shorter (if you check wikipedia, it says the m48 barrel was 597mm, but that is incorrect) so, in order to have the upper band line up w/the step in the barrel AND keep the same bands & spring, they shortened the stock at the bayo lug seat, and moved the sling band back an equal amount. At the sling band seat is where it’s most obvious.

looking at your pic 11/15, I “ think” the stock shown is still original length, which is 37-3/4 to 37-7/8”, no but plate or bayo lug, & just a tad under 38” even with those parts installed. it IS cracked at the lower band shoulder though. Could you show us the left side view of the sling band seat? when stocks were shortened, there was almost always a piece of wood glued in on the side at the sling band seat (because they used a screwdriver instead of a sharp chisel?) AT RIGHT ANGLES TO THE GRAIN of the stock! Makes the conversion really obvious.

yes the stocks they used for newly made M48s & clones were made new & not shortened K98k stocks.

I was aware of the difference in the barrel specs, but didn't realize they re-used original stocks. Thanks for the clarification.

I've got a couple stocks from that same seller. I'm a little nervous now.

that patch is exactly what I was talking about, BUT: there’s a relationship between the sling band shoulder and the steps in the barrel channel & that looks normal. before i responded earlier i looked at a full length stock of mine & measured it, with cupped butt plate & bayo lug, its 38” minus a hair from butt to base of bayo lug. by your meter stick, it sure looks close to 38”, the end where the bayo lug is only has 1 pin hole, so i think that one IS full length, even if clearly Yugo used. do you have a K98k length barreled action to drop into the stock? when you do that, if shortened it will stand in a stock altered by Yugoslavia for their refurbs a standard k98 barrel’s last step will stick out past the band by about 3/8”.

I understand you wanting to put the rifle back to what it was originally, but if you're using a stock with the Yugo applied numbers, it's somewhat fruitless, unless they can be removed.
Wish the Norwegian rework stock sources hadn't dried up! THAT would be perfect for your project
