I bought this interesting rifle at an auction recently, and was not the rifle I was watching the auction for. It went for a very reasonable price, and after I started looking at it, the more I looked at it, the further I was drawn in. So drawn in that I completely missed the rifle I had planned to buy, which went for a mere fraction of its market value. At first glance I wrote this rifle off as a sporterized 1871, and bid expecting to part it out. Once I started looking at the pictures in detail trying to determine what I bought, I realized that it was probably not a sporter. But what is it?
The rifle has proper inspection and acceptance and numbering on every part. The fit, finish, and construction is in line with any German military rifle I have handled. It is not marked on the side rail with any "model" markings, but does have an 1881 "acceptance date" stamp on the receiver. The only thing that is definitely altered, is the fore end is cut, and from what I can see from construction, and remaining bluing on the barrel, would have been the same, or very similar to an 1871. The barrel is about 9 1 /2" shorter than a standard 1871. The front sight base is integral to the barrel as is the front sight! The bottom lug is soldered, just as an 1871. The rear sight is obviously very different than both models of carbine. However, comparing, it is easy to see that this rear sight is based directly off of.
