Romanian VZ24 Germanized

Here is a recent pick up for me. It seems like finding a unscrubbed King Carol crested VZ24 is tough to find on its own. This one is matching with an intacted crest and has gone threw one of the German depots. I can’t find a depot mark on the rifle. The German modifications that I noticed are the marked bolt take down disc, renumbered band, Gustloff armorer follower, hold-open on mag and blued bolt. It was duffle cut at some point. Some black paint here and there on the rifle and sling, seems like it’s been there a while. I am wondering if the sling is the original that would have been issued with the rifle to the Romanians? Dose anyone have any thoughts on the originality of the sling or any other aspects of the rifle. If you want to see something not photoed, please ask and I will provide. At any rate, a nice addition to my Beutewaffen!

That's a fine example. I'd love to find one like it. It is hard to find a Romanian Vz with intact crest and also very hard to find one that isn't beat, isn't import marked, and is major parts matching. The German rebuild is like icing on the cake. I do Vz 24 and Vz24 searches on GB several times per week and don't remember seeing an example with intact Romanian crest, non-import marked, and major parts matching. Very, very nice.

That is a really cool score, it would be nice to find more out there to generate some trends...here is mine to compare and contrast...

Certainly untypical as the production was 1940, it could be only post 1941/2 realised, question remains the various parts of romanian contract as the reciever was proofed in Brno and bolt was reserialed and buttstock is too reserialed? it would be good date the dissmounting ring on buttstock what for HZA is it? or production . Under the buttstock is different serial number. Buttstock is Vz23 what is really strange. It corespond with the buttplate.

Very nice rifle. Out of curiosity did this one come from Legacy? I remember they had a German King Carol a few months back.

You know come to think about it this rifle kind of reminds me of the VZ 24 I posted up last year. It was a combination of parts from a vz23 and a VZ 24.

I looked threw your thread when I was considering this one’s merits.

I am not certain. I acquired this rifle in a trade with another collector.

That's a very cool Vz.24 modified Jory, with the added bonus of the King Carol crest (y) You're a braver man than me taking off buttplates. I put a gunsmith screwdriver head in it and if it won't turn with two fingers I leave it.

Yes very nice find. As noted, the stock and lower band is from VZ23. The lower swivel pivots on that model as there was no lower sling swivel on the left side like the VZ24 stock had.

So do you guys believe the stock numbered were German depot applied? The stock was sanded and numbers reapplied to match the receiver and bolt and renumbered front band?

Jory here's a few pictures of my piece to compare yours too. It was a combination of VZ23, and VZ24 parts. The stock was still numbered on the left side by the Czechs but was matched on the underside to the rifle by the Germans. Also duffle cut too. I just wish I could figured out what depot did the work to begin with. Maybe it was just finished at one of the Czech plants 1939-1940 when the Germans were in charge from leftover parts? Who knows but still cool!

Thanks Jordan! And nice rifle. Your font on the numbers on the stock is definitely different than mine…Ostfront for depot? I had a member here suggest that depot as a possibility. He would know way more than me

If the stock is not depot marked, its probably HZa Ulm. They were the depot assigned to handle Czech weapons, and they don't seem to have ever marked the wood for whatever reason.

Yours is similar to my ZaUlm build. Front band SN in the same place, stock SN looks similar, etc.

I personally would look at joining of barell to receiver, and what for barell is there? as the sights looks very early, not romanian ones, personally i would have problem with VZ23 stock assembled in 1942 and later period on romanian receiver.
The second link is too problematic rifle, note the wrong WaA on barell. There is too VZ23 front barell band. I would be very carefully on similar rifles.
