Restoring a Sporterized K98

We were almost right. It’s a Luftwaffe depot build (some of it). I agree, worth picking up if it’s less than $350-400.

Tre Cool

I have to admit, on a personal basis I think I have only seen a Luftwaffe accepted stock, never a receiver first hand.

The wood relief around the cross bolt is pretty proud so it may be a candidate for a donor front end patch. They don't show up often but I may be able to locate one. If that is it's original stock anyway. If not, belay my last. Stock and hardware replacement can run $200-$350 depending on condition and mismatch or matching metal.

Mowzerluvr,
I cannot find a single mark on the stock, so not sure if its original or not.
It is in great shape, whats the chance of finding a donor front end patch?

Also i'm in the market for the missing stock hardware,
front and rear bands , spring and bayo lug and cleaning rod.
If anyone has the correct parts please let me know.
Thanks ,
Tony

I will ask my source Tony. The other parts are easy enough to get. I have all of those spare parts.

Y’all were pretty darn right! There were several clues that made me think it wasn’t a blm, the bolt partially threw me off on one detail and the exact location of the S/N wasn’t BLM typical, but a Luftwaffe build answered all these!

Tony, the stock has nothing to do with the rifle, it was made in roughly 1944, I circled the Oberndorf stock proof in your picture. The metal is neat though! I would have picked it up for sure.

Fly, thanks got the response, so in your opinion rather
Then repairing this stock , I should find a correct period stock ?
Tony

Tony, that would be my recommendation. I am not positive on these Luft builds, how late they were made, others can answer that for sure, but it may take pictures of the barrel codes under the wood line to narrow that down. It maybe a 1940/41 but I am not positive on that. Regardless the stock should be of earlier production without a riveted cross bolt, mostly likely flat buttplate laminate but if these did go into 41?? An early cupped stock could be appropriate. I wouldn’t personally strive for “perfect” on putting this one together as it’s already missing too many original parts (bottom metal etc) but it is at the very least an interesting BR. Many of these show up built on bsw 1939 receivers, this is the first I personally recall seeing on a 39 Lübeck receiver.
