Refinishing walnut stock

I’m not sure what the finish is, the seller hasn’t been responding but basically it’s been refinished. The color is fine but it’s extremely glossy, I’d like to remove the gloss somehow. Or if that doesn’t work I’m fine with refinishing it, if so what would I use to strip the finish off?

Could I follow these videos expect apply several coats of BLO or flaxseed?

Depends a lot on what you're trying to do with it. BLO isn't going to be correct, but then again the stock's already pretty mulched.

Frankly I'd probably just leave it as is. You're likely to do more damage trying to fix it than just leaving it alone. You need to know exactly what that shiny finish is, for example, and any sanding you do is going to probably destroy what remains of the stock markings. Looks like it was already sanded pretty well to close up the wood and help give it that glossy finish, so you're fighting against that.

what if I use 0000 steel wool or something and just try to get dull the gloss down a bit? or some chemical, also I didn't plan on sanding it down. it's driving me crazy how it looks with the gloss because it makes the stock not even look original.

Steel wool may dull it down a bit, but IMHO, it'll never look "right" with whatever that shiny goop is...

If it were mine, I would completely strip it down to bare wood, carefully, and not touch it at all with sandpaper or steel wool once bare, and rub in a couple of coats of BLO....and not pool it on and let it dry, rub in by hand, let soak in for a few hours, and wipe off excess. A couple of coats and it should look great. The trick is not to try and get a finish that sits on the surface, but just gets absorbed.

Usually its best not to mess with stocks, especially if you don't know what you are doing, but this is essentially "ruined" as is, bubba already done F'ed it, if done carefully it could only look better.

alright thanks I'll probably do that or flaxseed oil, anything would be better than what's on now lol
