Here is my recently acquired S/242G bayonet. The condition on it is beautiful and I couldn’t be happier! I think I’ve only found one example of this year and maker on here. What is the rarity of these?

Thanks for additional pictures, maybe is there on surface a renesaince wax, anyway on some places it looks like period refurbishment, the screw were removed from grips. It remains a scarce early piece, what is important is matching.

Pretty good pics. Good enough to see fingerprints on that blade by the serial number as well. I can never say this enough. Always, wipe your fingerprints off every time you handle your bayonet bare handed. The acids in the oils left behind from your fingers and hands can and will permanently etch the blue. It can happen in minutes and once done cannot be removed. If not attended to, it can even cause damage to the metal and cause corrosion. Wipe all metal parts with a clean, soft cloth (an old t-shirt works well) and light gun oil. Leave a thin coat of oil on your bayonet. If you store your bayonet, inspect it at least once a month for rust. More if you live in a humid climate. Always wipe it off after handling. Wear gloves (nitrile or cotton) is suggested.

Thank you! What are some traits of a period refinish and what would the original finish look like?

Fleck areas on blade, and pommel near wood grips, but this could be as mentioned waxed or older vaseline dryed, and the condition could be origin here. You should inspect it on sunny day with magnyfying glass. I would certainly good oil the metall parts.

Here is some natural light on a scattered showers day with an overcast. I cleaned out most of the wax and wiped it down with balistol.
