Real “black widow” advice.

Is there anyway to 100% authenticate a “black widow”Luger? From what understand its just grips and an unnumbered mag that can easily be faked.

Looking for a byf marked luger and it seems most of them are the “black widow” rather than the walnut grips.

Thanks all!

Short answer: no. The best you can do is try to verify the authenticity of the grips themselves, which is getting harder as very good repros are becoming more common. A mid- to late byf 41 or any byf 42 could have been shipped with either type of grip and an unnumbered bakelite base magazine.

Unless you got it from the vet and even then in the right circumstances, there is no way to know 100%. Of course there are few things we can know 100%. There are definitely about a half dozen things (short of getting the piece from a vet 30-50 years ago) these include ensuring the grips are real, no small feat, ensuring grip wear is consistent with gun finish wear, fit of the grips, correct range of serial suffix’s for the bling on it….and maybe one or two more

Would either of you guys be willing to look at one I am thinking about? Lugers aren’t something I really want, or have the funds, to collect but I do know what type I want and I want a very nice example. Unless I get a screaming deal or later decide I want a WW1 Luger this will probably be the only one I get.
