Question 98K

Hello!

I recently inherited this K98 from my grandfather and I’m wondering if anyone has an idea on if it’s real or not. Also a price on it if it is real just so we know.

-Thanks

define “real”? There aren’t any new production 98ks pretending to be authentic. There are old 98ks that have been messed with that pretend to be something they are not.

Your rifle appears to be honest and original besides some stock sanding (unfortunate but common)

What would something like this be worth in the current condition? And when I say real I mean a German one from ww2 and not something made later

I am not so sure it has been reblued, hard to tell from these pictures, looks heavily oiled to me. If the OP values this one at $700. Please PM me, I will have the funds out tomorrow 😀.

BTW, the upper barrel band is reversed. The sling loop should be on the left side of the rifle.

I agree that the metal doesn't look reblued. The stock was gone over though. Overall, it looks to be a matching rifle, ar coded which are not common. Worth well over 1K. I could see it going for 1500-1800, even with the sanded stock.

Imho definitely reblued. Look at how shiny the back of the bolt is. The rear barrel band has pits that are covered. Rear sight is definitely blued, not oxidized in the “white”.

Looking closer, I'm 50/50 with some parts. Some do look blued/reblued, others don't. The pics/potential oiling might be throwing things off.

Blued take down disc and buttplate?
The take down disc definitely looks blued. Maybe the buttplate too, but I've seen a lot of buttplates with so much patina that they end up looking blued.

How would someone reblue a take down disk? It’s such a difficult part to take down, probably not worth the effort.

You can also see where they took out the recoil lug to reblue it, and put it back in facing the wrong direction.

I honestly don’t see any metal on this gun that I can say with 100% certainty is factory. It looks entirely reblued to me. A CE 41 might have a finish like this, but IMO an AR wouldn’t.

What’s the difference in CE and AR?

They are actually pretty darn easy to take out. I will take them out of my rifles to clean. If they show any rust. Have taken them out of Gew 98’s, kar 98A’s and K98k’s.

What exactly is reblue?

Both are standard K98k‘s. Just different manufacturers. CE is the code for J.P. Sauer. They are known for their commercial quality bluing. Even towards the end of 1943.
Okay I don’t know much about this all I appreciate the knowledge on this there’s a lot I don’t know I just saw a lot of the parts matched with the serial numbers and I was curious

We need some more pictures in some diffused light (maybe indirect sun or when cloudy outside. I’m really having a tough time in the metal here. It doesn’t look like much of the original polishing marks or geometry have been disturbed, but the stock disk and the polish do look a bit funny.

Likewise, but it having the same color tone as the other parts that do not have a patina is questionable to me. I also noticed the rear sight leaf, it should be in the white. Lastly, in the picture with the rear receiver, you can see a clear reflection of the OP’s hand. Not sure if that indicates polishing. Could be wrong, but I’ve never handled that shinny of mid war k98k before.
