Polish Mauser Bayonet Collection

Gorgeous example pwcosol! That is something to be proud of!
I have read some polish sources and they call it nitridation instead of parkerising, it brings a green grey finish, evidently this is not a grey finish typical for phosphating. Mainly visible in pommel, fullers and crossguard. Other point is the sharpening of blade from middle length to tip only.

I got this bayonet sometime in the 1980s at a Great Western Show. A friend had it mounted with a 1938 or '39 K98k he was selling, was kind enough to separate the bayonet and allowed me to acquire it. Yes, the finish is not a "solid" gray, but does have a slight greenish tint. The observed shade tends to vary slightly depending on the light source, intensity, angle of viewing, etc. (as is the case in the last photo). If anyone is interested in pics of the others, LMK and will attach some additional .jpgs...

Thank you Bert for finding an English language copy of that bayonet book in Poland and sending it my way.

It is extremely well photographed and I can’t wait to read through it!

FYI there is a very early pattern Wz.22 bayonet (Zbr.4 is flipped the other way compared to my example on Page 1, and the serial is not stamped on the ricasso) on eBay right now. It is in pretty rough shape, but these are rather hard to find. I am not in the market for one, but if someone is interested, this is a somewhat rare opportunity to get one. Since I think links to active auctions are not allowed, search for "perkun" in eBay.

This year I picked up 2 more to add to the collection. The first is another Wz.98 bayonet, which is essentially a reworked S98/05 with additional Polish markings stamped on it. Curiously, the same serial number is marked twice on the bayonet (ricasso and guard) as well as the scabbard. It is marked Wz.98 on the pommel and has the smooth grip variation (without ridges).

The second was a Wz.24 that I got for dirt cheap (comparatively). It didn't come with a scabbard (I have a spare Polish repro one I am intending to use), and it was in pretty poor condition. All metal parts were coated in rust, grips were dark brown from oil/grime, and at some point in its life, the owner used the bayonet as a hammer, as there are gouges/indentations in the metal and some places where the metal is "folded over". These deformations resulted in its inability to be mounted on a bayonet lug of a rifle. I recently had time to take it apart all the way down to the individual components and cleaned up the wood grips, addressed the surface rust, and used a very small file to touch up the metal burrs that caused binding for a bayonet lug. It looks quite serviceable now.

Nice both pieces, mainly the polish matching S98/05. Wz24 was greatly restored, the blade was sharpened.
