Stock has been pretty aggressively cleaned… sad people can’t just leave these alone. Simple minds like shiny stocks… but not history or money apparently.

Note the bolt cutout edges are rounded, someone really put some elbow grease on a piece of steel wool or something

Yeah what the hell is up with this stock cleaning, polishing, and glazed donut look. Wish I had a buck for every one I have seen. Obviously don't realize they are destroying value. Pretty don't cut it on 98s
Yeah, it was a 'thing' as was the bleach bottle blonde stock fad. I missed both of them, but I've seen the carnage.

I forgot to mention the white stuff in every number/stamp. That was also a thing that has mostly fallen out of favor.

The white highlighting color fill of every number 😂.I've seen people use chalk for camera highlighting but not for a permanent look

Yeah I've not done either but I can at least see the chalk be 'reversible', but I do wonder if even with a brush you can totally get it out of stock stamps. I wonder what others think about that.

People also used some kind of filler or pencil but I don't think most people used that on the wood. Again, it's totally not my wheelhouse but I've seen some discussions.

I agree I would never do the stock stamps either for that reason you mentioned. I was kind of surprised to see the one above having the stock stamps color filled.

Something else I first heard about here I believe is that unscrupulous sellers would fill bad/fake numbers with the white goop to try and either hide it or add 'authenticity' to it.

To clarify, I'm NOT saying any of this is applicable to this piece. Merely discourse.

Well I suppose many stocks were turned into look more like cut down sporters back in the 50s or early 60s when these rifles were of little interest or value to collectors. Probably a lot cheaper than buying a Win. Model 70 or Rem. 700 for a hunting rifle. Still a real shame in hindsight though.

My recent pickup has some sort of white paint or nail polish in it. Absolutely no idea how to remove it… stock was sanded too so maybe I’ll leave it.

One of my Luger holsters has this “white” crap in the date/manufacture markings. Can’t remove it all. Appears to be part of the leather now.

To Remfan’s comment- I remember when you could walk into Interarms’ retail outlet and buy a near-mint K98k for $69.95. They were called “German army rifles” back then and nobody knew anything about them. I remember a conversation where someone asked what “byf” meant. Nobody knew.

Just out of curiosity, what year are we roughly talking here?

on metal, I use a store brand cotton swab dipped in acetone, & a round wooden tooth pic if more is needed.
on wood………….maybe a cotton patch damp w/acetone, but maybe not.
