Norwegian k98k shooting low

Hi there been shooting my k98kf1 I noticed that the gun always hits low with commercial soft point ammo. Is this a common issue? I use sako 150gr and norma whitetail 150gr sp ammo. I perfer to level the sight and put the pumpkin on a post. I intend to hunt with mine. And yes my sights are the Normal norwegian post. To get the strike point to where I want I will have to adjust the sights all the way to 1000-1200 meters. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated thanks.
 
Try the 196/200 grain bullets. The S&B SPCE bullets are supposed to be great deer medicine. PPU Softpoints aren't as fast, but try those too.

Still, that sight is crazy high adjusted.

IIRC, the German technique for aiming was to cover the target w/the muzzle. not my favorite sight picture, but knowing this may help you adjust. I don’t have experience with those brands, but in general civilian hunting ammo is loaded less hot than military ball ammo. Your rifle is a conversion from 8mm, but the fundamental design of the sights is the same (despite the Norwegian mods). I like the rear modified sight, as it lets me actually SEE the rear notch, but not the thick front blade. What ranges are you shooting at?
 
Actually Most US 150 grain hunting ammo is loaded to a higher velocity than military M2 of which that rifle would have been sighted for . Of course the post talking about 8mm 196 / 200 bullets does not apply here . So if you have to set at 1000 meters to hit at 100 there is a major problem , even as bad as a bent barrel .

I have not shot the rifle with that setting ran out of ammo. With sako I think I had to adjust the sights to 600 or 700 to get it shooting good. I ordered a bore sight laser to double check if this is an issue. I was using a bore laser trainer made by accurize a norwegian laser training aide. It was forcing me to increase my sight all the way to 1000 meters to get on target.

WOAH that is crazy. Hmm it may be possible you have a damaged crown. My BCD 41 Posen did and would shoot 1.5-2 feet high and 4-6 feet to the right at 100 yards. I would bore sight your rifle and if the bore and sights match you have have a burr in the groove of your barrel. My bullets were flying straight in my BCD cause the holes were clean but due too the burr in the groove it messed up the gas seal around the bullet and would make it go high.
 
US Commercial .30-06 ammo is loaded hotter than US Military ammo.
This is why folks with M-1 Garands are advised to not use commercial ammo in their rifles.
That said, I don’t know if the Norwegian Commercia/Military ammo bears the same relationship.

I have a K98kF1 as well and my POA is POI. I routinely use mostly 150 to 165gr 30.06 usually Federal, Norma, or Winchester Deer XP. Now that said, I'm not the greatest with irons and have never taken a deer or hog with this rifle but my groups would be enough for vital shots at 100m. I either believe something is up with your barrel (hopefully not as Norwegian 30.06 ones are quite nice and rare to find) or it's a front sight post issue. I do have a M38 Turk mauser forestry carbine that I'd have to set the rear sight to 300m to get hits at 100m but then I found out it was because of the anemic PPU 8mm ammo. My German guns replicated the issue. So I would let that rule out the ammo being the problem for you. I'd try to change the front post first then try move onto the barrel if the problem persists. Keep us updated

Yep I zeroed the rifle the other day. I think it is the frontsight. The rifle had to have the sights set to 500meters to hit a gong at 100meters. I shot norma 150grain whitetail and windchester 180 grain whitetail I think for this deer season I am good. I have my two -0.5 swedish mauser blade come in. Sadly it's the exact height as my current norwegian mauser blade. Might see if I can get someone to file the new sights down to change impact point. I will have to send my mauser to gunsmith to see if the barrel is bent too or to modify the new front sight posts. Lots to think about. Now. I am personally happy I got it zeroed for hunting with irons.

I think you've figured out the issue. You can always add/remove material from the sight blade to get your true desired result. It suck and is tedious but hardly any of the rifle irons will be 100% when you get them. Have a No4Mk1 enfield in absolute pristine but using S&B FMJ it shoots like a foot low and to the left. There's no way that the dude using it in war would've been cool with that. Shot it with British surplus ammo and same thing. So it became off sight somewhere between war and my redneck a$$ getting ahold of it. Just gotta mess with the sights and tailor them to you, Cheer!

Good points. Thankyou for the advice and help. I am probably have the front sights I ordered filed down so I just use the default 100meter setting. But even now that I know the zero I am happy. It's why I appreciate the extra 2000meters Worth of sight adjustment, gives me lots to play with. Cheers.
