New to me G.33/40 - Looking for opinions

Hi all!

First of all apologies if this is not in the correct forum, I was unsure if it fit better here or in the German contract rifles area.

I recently acquired this dot 1942 G.33/40. These are outside of my usual collecting area, so I realize I am not nearly as knowledgeable on them as many of you are here. This being the first one I have had hands on which was not sporterized, I don't really know what to look for on these or any details I may be missing. Any opinions on the quality of the rifle and perhaps its approximate value would be very much appreciated. If I do decide to move it along at some point, I will try do so here first.

The rifle seems to have a matching original bolt which based on my comparing with other photos does not appear to be renumbered, though I will leave that determination to the experts. The cleaning rod present does not match. Sight hood is missing. All other metal parts seem to be original and I feel that they retain their original finish. The stock and handguard, though they seem to be original 33/40 pieces and have matching finish and condition, don't appear to match the serial of the rifle. Markings on the wood are rather worn and difficult to make out. Stock I don't feel is sanded, but it certainly does have some wear. Bore I would describe as very good, shiny with sharp rifling and a good muzzle/crown.

If anyone has any thoughts on the rifle to share, good or bad, I would be very appreciative. Also if there are any questions or additional pictures I can provide please just let me know, I would be happy to do so.

Thank you!

Its a good representative example of a hard to get rifle in correct condition,of concern to me are the filed out wood under the bolt handle, the blued sight ladder, and the total lack of proofs on the stock.Heres some photos of the one Mauser 99 sold me.

The stock doesn't match but is correct (laminated) for a 1942 rifle. The lack of proofs on the stock is also correct for 42. Filed out wood under bolt handle and blued sight ladder, shouldn't be. All-in-all a decent looking rifle.

Thanks for the observations so far everyone.

I do have to ask just for my own understanding, but what is meant by filed out wood under the bolt handle? In other pictures of laminate stock 33/40 rifles I have seen, they seem to have a small area dished out under the bolt stem. Is this not a normal feature? Or am I looking at the wrong thing?

I have a dot 42 G33/40 in original factory fresh condition. The only markings in the wood are "dot" on stock and hand guard, just in front of the rear sight. Don't know what was meant by "filed out wood". I see no evidence of wood sanding or refinishing, only honest use, wear, and age. You'll have a very hard time finding an original front sight hood and cleaning rod as these are rare and expensive. Both have been offered as reproductions, but I don't know of a current source. Any original 988k sling would be correct.

You are correct.....this area is okay too. The size seems to fluctuate a bit.
